Hi folks, how long can I take to respond to an offer letter?
t
Negotiable.
g
I mean can I take a week to answer? How do I negotiate this?
d
You’d just need to ask the people who gave the offer about its deadline. If the deadline doesn’t fit your timeline, you can ask them to wait upto 2-3 weeks. Most places will.
g
2-3 weeks? Isn't that too long? IDK I read on reddit that 2-3 days is the usual time people give you.
d
2-3 days sounds a bit less to decide anything. Atleast 1 week should be doable for them.
t
Any place that had the opening for longer than a week can obviously afford to allow you a week to decide. It isn't an emergency no matter what tricks they pull to make you think it is one. Better than accepting quick then going back. Almost everything is negotiable usually. And especially if you are skilled and you market it well enough for them to realise it. Not just comp.

Okay got it. Thanks!

I once took 3-4 days and thought through it and said NO. The HRs will follow up because they don't want to lose you. But you can take time (7 days too!) to say YES or NO.

It costs them a ridiculous amount of money to hire someone. Average cost to make an offer can be 30k on low end to a few lakhs on the higher end. Cost to hire is almost always over a lakh. They aren't going to throw that effort into the drain if you say you need more time. This is true of any place that has a recruiter on their payroll. These are costs for entry level positions. Costs rise dramatically with skill demand. They spent money, and time of specialists, to bring you to offer stage. They'll try their best to get you to accept the offer. Can be time pressure to sweetening and spicing the deal depending on how you play your cards.
