Visited the passport office yesterday to renew the passports of the entire family. Just mine was accepted and taken up for processing. The passport applications of the wife and kids have been put on hold until my passport gets delivered. Biggest TIL moment was that a marriage certificate only stands as proof of wedlock as happened on date mentioned in the certificate. Not as proof of living together. The husband (male) needs to endorse the name of the wife as a spouse on the passport and that is how the government discerns that the man and woman live together under the same roof.

As someone who has worked remotely for a full-time job for two years, I noticed another negative issue - lack of socialization was making me unhappy. I missed working with a group and talking with people I respect during the day. Sure you could get on a call, but it's not the same. Watching other people work is also a great way to learn new tips and ways of working.

Also, you may miss some talk around the office of what might be coming up - I was unaware of some layoffs that were coming because I did not overhear it being talked about.

Something that I’ve been noticing as a pattern at my new remote job: 1. ZERO EMAIL. Most emails that come through are status emails. 2. No Channel messages on slack UNLESS critical. Maximum that can be used is

. Channel is when the house is burning. 3. 1 to 1 communication means that there’s really something important, YET, its not time bound. I can get back to answering it when I can. 4. If there’s something excessively critical, there’s an SMS / Whatsapp followed by a phone call after 5 minutes. The message says that they need to reach me on the phone and will call me in 5 minutes. 5. Tasks are picked up from a central dashboard and agreed upon with deadlines. Each task HAS a deadline. 6. Tasks are the only place where someone communicates with you. The other place is github comments on either commits or PRs. 7. If a feature has to be roughed out / something needs to be discussed, a call is setup with a few days advance intimation. 8. You’re required to be on the call only as long as you are contributing OR gaining value. 9. You are expected to get stuff done and move out of the way so the system can function. You’re not the system, you’re the cause of evolution of the system.

I like it that this is how most human brains function. There’s only ONE pattern I notice of utmost criticality here - Lack of Cognitive Overload. If you do not have to process things that do not matter, you free up so much more mental bandwidth to get really good stuff out of the door. For example, I am the only guy in the company that does DevOps. I single handedly moved a fleet of machines across VPCs in 4 hours today. That was because I told people that I’m doing this task between a defined window. Everyone just let me be. Did not get 1 ping asking for something.

Good tactic. Offer a taste, let it run long enough to get people used to it, then take it away to make people complain.
