I don't have a static ip to run a home server. Have to spin up a vm. Might also work as my vpn. Definitely something to consider

you do not need to run one - not unless you are really prepared to put the time into it... If you do want to run a dns server ,there's also the option to run off a VM in a datacenter somewhere...

I'm not prepared to run a public server, but might run one on a vm for personal use ( not advertised anywhere ) along with a whole bunch of other stuff I've been planning to run

That was how i started. On my laptop, and then moved to a desktop to handle residential demands and then moved to publish it for the rest of the world

Haha. Great discussion folks. What you guys spoke about - all went over my head but what I gathered overall is that CF is good to get a start on and you can then move to Akamai (hopefully) when you hit zoomcar level traffic. @straight-continent-34777 any insights on what kind of traffic zoomcar sees? Too bad that AWS load balancers failed for you. That sucks. I ask because at my last place we were serving 35k requests per min on an Elastic Beanstalk setup with Route53 which worked with out issues. Just curious to see at what levels does it fail...

@loud-glass-33663 hehe! Our average traffic is just shy of 6-7k rpm. But during peak hours, it surges all the way upto 200k-250k.

the problem with aws's load balancers is not their capacity - they can take north of 500krpm before they start cracking
  • s

    straight-continent-34777

    08/24/2019, 5:30 PM
but technically, they cannot handle a spike...

a steady state traffic build up works wonders on aws
  • s

    straight-continent-34777

    08/24/2019, 5:31 PM
so, what we do is to ask both akamai AND AWS for a prewarm through their support request channels
  • s

    straight-continent-34777

    08/24/2019, 5:31 PM
prewarm on aws is far more important IMO.

    08/24/2019, 5:31 PM
Akamai has somehow cracked the tech behind handling instant bursts of traffic

so thats the giant.. AWS' ALB / Cloudfront can both NOT handle bursts - the jury is out in the open on why

Ported my blog (https://divu.in) from Medium to a custom app (for "reasons") and wrote about productivity systems: https://divu.in/productivity-systems - And cooking: https://divu.in/cooking πŸ™‚ Let me know what you think πŸ™ πŸ™Œ

Why a custom app? Why reinvent the wheel???

Medium is a plague in my opinion. Centralizing all writing into one hosted platform is a bad idea, and fighting their signup/signin reminders is a pain. I have a custom rule to start a new sandbox for every single medium page. (firefox, temporary containers)

Medium is PITA. I agree. But whats the benefit of building another self hosted platform ?

Wow your focus and Notion list is envious @refined-vegetable-38843 Did you use your personal domain on Medium as well earlier? Would love to know the β€œreasons”. I started writing after a long time and hope to keep at it this time. Also need to bring all my writing in together. This is my post for the week. https://medium.com/@koeldas/5-reasons-why-remote-wont-work-for-you

One of the main reasons is that I want to write interactive blog like this: https://meltingasphalt.com/interactive/going-critical/ in future and having a custom setup makes that easier. With next.js + mdx + react, it is not a lot of effort to build most of mediums features, it took me 3-5 hours to build everything and port the data πŸ™‚ I can do a bunch of custom stuff now like print friendly blogs (that removes title etc and makes it consumable) + interactive stuff etc. I am very aware of "reinventing the wheel" and that is why I won't build my own analytics/newsletter system (was considering πŸ˜„) but blog is my own. Another reason was the writing medium.. medium is nice and shiny but need me to have internet + interactions are slow vs opening files and writing to them at will!
