<@URGFPBS0N>: What type of data are you looking to...
# puppet
j
@IlovPuppet: What type of data are you looking to see? And which version of Puppet are you running?
i
Agent reporting. Currently, on open source puppet core 8.16
j
Okay, so you want something for Puppet Core that has lightweight reporting but not the full type of UI that is available with Puppet Enterprise? Are you looking just to see when agents last reported in, or are you looking for deeper details than that?
i
Looking for recently deployed changes, drifts or failures etc
I previously installed puppetboard. However, due to vulnerabilities or outdated packages I had to uninstalled it
j
I was asking the questions because I was chatting with somebody who was working on something for Puppet Core and I'm not sure if it meets your needs. I'll share this quick discussion with them and see if it would be a fit.

i
That would be very helpful
t
Maybe worth checking openvoxview. Go based, modern development.
j
Is that this one, @tuxmea? github.com/cvquesty/openvox-gui I think @CVQuesty is the brains behind that. Not sure if it still has support for Puppet Core or not?
c
yeah, that’s me
t
that's another webui.
j
So many UIs 😄
t
there are several works independently trying to build ui with more features, not only reporting
openvoxview is compatible with PE and Puppet Core.
i
Ok
Is it rpm based installation ?
t
container
maybe there is a rpm. check the repo release page
j
This repo?
<https://github.com/voxpupuli/openvoxview>
t
yes
no usermanagement! customers usually put a webserver with auth in front
i
Ok
How simple is this to setup ? Compare to puppetboard ? I know puppetboard setup was really simple with very few configuration needed
t
and it is included in helm chart : https://github.com/OpenVoxProject/openvox-helm-chart

Some good news from the Puppet team. We will be releasing a Web UI for Puppet Open Source, Puppet Core users shortly. Right now end of August 2026 is the due date and we are in final testing. We are looking for users to test it out. This is a free UI for Open Source Puppet or Puppet Core (no cost, just free)
🙌 1
i
Awesome! Looking forward to it 🙂

i
Will it have additional features like executing tasks/plans etc? Using the pxp-agent protocol?
n
Yes
i
I hope it will be using same protocol like PE for executing tasks/plans on the agents
t
is pxp PE only or also available with Puppet Core?
n

b
Which license will be used?
n
This will be available with Open Source Puppet and Puppet Core users will also be able to use this. No need to sign any license @bastelfreak if you are referring to the Puppet Core online license. We wanted to create a free UI for Puppet users... all puppet users.
b
But under which license will you publish it? Apache2, AGPL? MIT?
n
Sure, let me confirm for you. But it will be available to all Puppet users (end of August 2026).
i
I thought PXP protocol comes only with PE.
n
Just to be clear you are asking about Open Source Puppet / Puppet Core..? and using Bolt to run tasks? @IlovPuppet
i
Puppet core support PXP for execution of tasks/plans?
n
So for Puppet Core it does NOT support that as it is a Puppet Enterprise feature capability. Let me know if that answers your question.

i
@Nico Kruger do we have any tentative date when exactly the dashboard is coming for the Opensource Puppet core ?
j
End of August 2026 is the tentative date, nothing really more specific than that. It will depend on how the testing/stabilization goes over the next few weeks.
👍 1
n
Internal testing is going well, testing on larger node counts now for scale. Still aiming for end of August 2026 with EULA agreement allowing use for commercial and non commercial use at no cost.
🙌 1
i
Qq: would it support downloading the data in excel ?
n
What data would you like to download? If you can send me an example please. Also if you can share how you use the data so we can ensure we get you exactly what is needed.
i
Such as all events by classes, corrective changes, intentional changes, and failures in last 24hrs ,48hrs etc. the data should includes node names, class name, what resources has been changed etc.
Unresponsive nodes, expired nodes etc
n
Do you import this data to another system? Maybe we can help with a direct connection if you do. Thank you for the info let me have a look to see what we can do for you
i
Currently, we do send the data to elastic search and Grafana. Logstash reporting is enabled in the environment.
✅ 1
We have approximately 60k nodes where puppet is enabled. However, doing the reporting is real challenge for us due to excessive data.
n
Gotcha, I know the Puppet Enterprise team has a new module for Observability data to Grafana to help enterprise customers with this exact request. Let me have a look to see if we can help with the exporting for you in new UI.
👍 1
i
@Nico Kruger any latest developments on the new dashboard?
n
Yes, we are making great progress. Internal testing is being completed here with the Puppet Solutions Engineer team. Current goal is next week to do final testing and get it out. Sounds like you maybe open to do some early validation on it? If you are let me know and I can get you the repo so you can grab the UI (we should have that early next week).
i
Sure
I would be happy to do that
🙌 1
@Nico Kruger Hope you doing fine! Any update on the release ?
n
Good news the first alpha/beta is now ready to test out here: github.com/puppet-stagehand/stagehand-release
🙌 1
b
What is the license? And will the sourcecode be published?
n
Run the repo and you will see the EULA to review it, let me know if you have questions. Free for commercial and non-commercial use as this is a project created by the Puppet SE Community at Perforce (the team I work on). Right now it is free closed source but we are open to publishing the source code if the rest of the community feels that would make sense.
t
How about adding a few screenshots so people can have the option to preview what they can get prior doing the quickstart setup? (Just another one of my crazy ideas)
n
Absolutely.. we will push some screenshots into the Repo to make that easier to see... great call out!
s
@bastelfreak We're still reviewing everything as it starts getting into shape, but most (if not all) of the components should become available and under Apache 2.0 in time. I'm still sorting through some proprietary bits around Puppet Core installation and configuration that will sit outside of that so it may be a bit.
b
okay, that would be nice
I've a stupid question: There are like 4 dashboards available. Why did you build a fifth one? do you have any USPs? Any reason to start another dashboard instead of contributing to existing ones?
n
No stupid questions!... would be interesting to ask the 4 other people why they also created their own... wonder what each one is doing differently (meaning what each solved differently).
c
i created my console before you did. Alessandro started his right before me but I wanted the extra features in the installer/metrics/Bolt control. Foreman has been around since before any of us were in Puppet-land and likely as an answer to the original Puppet Dashboard being foxed to create the Puppet Enterprise Console back in 2014. Add to that the nice dash in SIMP/Sicura and other varied projects that have been around for awhile. In fact, I was bugging Puppet to bring the dashboard back for my customers as they were shutting it down for our mutual customers. As far as dashboards go, you guys are the latest ones to the party.
(In open-source-land, that is)
b
Foreman is from 2009
c
Then even before!
I was still using the dashboard and writing with Gepetto
n
Maybe it is worth creating a list of the differences so we can help consolidate into the stuff people need.... but also remove things that are no longer usefull.
