My understanding is that is both, BaaS and also you have the framework option

And the price has gone up to a minimum $35 pm + extras?
  • j

As you can see here that’s correct

but hey, they take care of what you don’t want to take care anymore, to me still good

That's quite a hike. Cuts out quite a lot of the market.

If it's no longer an affordable BaaS for many and you have to self-host without the dashboard, what's the advantage over just setting up a GraphQL server with GraphiQL via Node + Express?
  • i

I'm not sure I quite understand Graphcool's positioning now since the framework transition
  • j

    jhony0311

    10/27/2017, 6:03 PM
To me is the fact that you still not doing the Node + Express thing, which is one of the reasons why you might got here in first place

    10/27/2017, 6:04 PM
Are you just using it for client-side apps?
  • j

    jhony0311

    10/27/2017, 6:06 PM
Yes, most of the time, also is a good tool to prototype quickly and still have good bases. Tried that with firebase, for example, but wasn’t that good

    What about MongoDB or Scraphold?
  • i

    Ian

    10/27/2017, 6:08 PM
    Have you tried those?
  • j

    jhony0311

    10/27/2017, 6:09 PM
Yup, but I mean for testing things out, doing prototypes I don’t want to set up those things, I just want to have something that back my data layer while I show something to my team or client

So you use the free tier only? I'm looking at it for much the same use case but I also need to know that I can make the hop to a paid tier and actually launch with the app. For small apps and testing I can't justify $35 + extras on top of serverless functions etc.

Yes, it have been working good to me, that good that we are looking forward to start including in the projects we prototyped using it

At $9 per month it was nice. Much like Scraphold. Hosting BaaS which takes the grunt work out of that side of things and I can get up and running quickly. If I have to setup Docker, and pay a lot more per service and I still get the same thing it doesn't look quite as attractive anymore

Also I use a docker-based setup for hosting and Docker in Docker doesn't play well so that makes it an either/or. 😕

I really want the hosted version but a 4 fold increase is hard to justify when I get the same as before (quick setup and BaaS GraphQL) and when others offer the same with a 4 fold decrease. I guess I'm just confused as to their new direction, niche, and pricing. Hopefully a company representative can jump in?

Another question for profi, why do you use the GraphQLClient, Apollo, Relay, etc? Why just not simple fetch?

even super lightweight graphql client can weight more than simple fetch, that is stuff I can’t recognise

It smells like an out to me. Hand off the tools in good faith. Shift focus / mission elsewhere. I suspect we’ll probably receive notifications to a blog talking about deprecation and new direction in the coming months.

Guys, let’s keep talking about price in a single thread. Makes it hard for people that want to answer questions be able to when this channel is full of people talking about pricing. Not trying to be a jerk but some people have questions. Let’s just be considerate.
