Orbstack and timemachine
# support

Hello Why the heck is is orbstack hiding the .img file from TM by default? who thought this was sa good idea to begin with? Data should always be safe first THEN you worry about disk usage not just the docker image but even the volumes the datastore are not backed up! hello? this a product you selling to companies, promoting to users and by default it will NOT have any backup anywhere! backblaze skip it , you disabled timemachine by default this is unacceptable and show incompetence by the team in the decision making process I lost a DB with more then 50GB of data thanks to someone thought they were the smartest person in the room, evidently they were not.
r
in TM there only a readme file the folder is 500 byte
backblaze does not see the whole folder at all
none has set that folder as exclusion
n
There are issues with some backup tools since the data file is a 8TB sparse disk, backblaze is one of those tools
n
There are also cases where if the time machine disk is not formatted as APFS, because it's a 8TB sparse file, it will try to prune storage
So by default right now, the toggle is off for including data in time machine backups
Because that is a better alternative than someone with a different disk type having their backups pruned
r
orbstack is a dev env mostly i imagine, it needs to have backups
also orbstack is macos only why TM compatibility was not assessed beforehand to make sure it works?
i lost over a month of work
n
This is all explained in the FAQs on the website
r
ye but that FAQ aint gonan save you when users come asking for explanation why they lost all their data
n
~/Library/Group\ Containers/HUAQ24HBR6.dev.orbstack/data/data.img
This is the file, there are two different sizes reported, there is actual usage and then the apparent size which shows 8TB
r
if cant be backed up = bad design i would call it a p0 fix level
i have 3 backup solution running any none saved it
n
Losing just orbstack data for someone who hasn't read the FAQ page or looked through the settings is nothing compared to someone getting their time machine backups purged because time machine thinks the data image is 8TB
It can be backed up
r
well then the design is inherently wrong or some compromise need to be found
lke make a sparsebundle image that grow as it goes
so its sub 20 GB instead of 8 TB
like i dont care of the docker images, i can recompile i can pull new one or rebuild from the dockerfile
but user data? data is a big nono
n
You could have backed up and validated at any point prior to needing to restore that you had it
I get that you are probably frustrated, but come on lol
r
i mean frustrated is an understatment
n
Clearly by the way you decided to post here about it
r
i mean the amount of data i lost is not small and it was important data
i cant even re produce some of that data
i think i will just use fs based storage from now on for data, volumes are not reliable
what can i say im very dissapointed
n
If Orbstack decided to do a 30GB sparse file, if you need to resize that would probably require resizing and actually rebooting the VM and haulting everything running for the new size to be recognized by apples virtualization framework
r
better then dataloss
anything better then dataloss at this point
n
So there is probably a reason that the default size is large, because then it can freely size up and down without restarting the environment
You could have prevented the data loss though, it's not like this was unavoidable
r
ooor could make an img file per container.... like i could come up with 20 different implementation in 20 minute all better then this one
n
And there is probably a reason you aren't building your own Orbstack
r
yea could have prevented like by cloning the drive i dunno nay other safety net that catches all kind of failure
n
Or just confirm that you had working backups and did at least one restore test / validation
Before you got to where you actually needed it
r
i sue ornstack because my dev machine is mobile, so compared to docker it has upsides
but there should be no cases where the compromise is the user data
i have TM literally set with no exclusions
n
The only compromise is that you didn't confirm you had things backed up though, not a fundamental flaw with Orbstack
r
to catch any of those hardline cases
ye good luck explaining that to the next person that aint a dev and loses data
Did you check to see if that toggle was enabled?
r
you see it completely wrong
aint my job for someone else to do their job properly
n
It's your job to manage your data
r
especially if im a paid customers that stuff does not fly
n
Losing just orbstack data is better than someone having time machine backups on by default with the wrong filesystem type and time machine nuking all their other data before processing the sparse file
r
ye but both are no go there should be no case where you hav to pick between two horrible decisions
its like asking someone do you wanna lose your right or left leg
do you wanna pick?
n
Except that it's not the only two choices
You also have the option of seeing the FAQ, seeing that it's just a toggle away
r
the default should be no user data loss
period
no execuses
n
You can't decide to not RTFM and complain someone else cut your leg off
r
if there something this big there should be a massive alert the first time you open the software
does not condone an inherent bad design
you cant just shift the responsibility always to the end user
that is not how a responsible person behave
n
I'm not shifting the responsibility, I'm just giving my opinion here as another user just like you are sharing your opinion
r
mien is not an opinion
its called common sense
n
It is. I have migrated my data twice with orbstack and time machine
Zero data loss because I understood the tool I put my data in
r
ye but you knew data is not retained in any backup
a person that does not have that knowleadge will the F...
n
It was retained in the backup because I ensured that it was on
Because I read the FAQ
r
ye im sorry that just the wrong mentality
n
You are fully entitled to your opinions like everyone else
r
i mean sure ok but you selling this to companies
dunno whos the owner
n
I'm not selling anything
I'm a user
I don't own or manage this project in any capacity
r
i guess i drop them an email
