Convert a VirtualBox Linux machine to an OrbStack ...
# support
j
I’ve set up Home Assistant, using the [Home Assistant Operating System disk image](https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/macos/) provided for macOS on Apple Silicon. Works great with VirtualBox. However, I’d prefer to run this via OrbStack. I’ve looked & looked & have not found a way to use the VMDK disk image provided for an OrbStack machine, nor is it clear to me how I would export the VirtualBox machine/appliance to a format OrbStack understands. Any ideas?

I don't think this is possible, I'm not sure if it has been shared how the templates are created and what is required
But you can't just import an arbitrary machine
j
please say more?
n
Sorry typo lol can't
You can export from Orbstack and import machines that were also from Orbstack
j
ah! gotcha, yeah, i’d figured that out, but good to have that confirmed
from what I can tell, OrbStack’s “image” format is a ZStandard-compressed TAR of a filesystem?
n
Once again, I don't think the mechanism has really been discussed prior. It's definitely compressed but I'm not sure what of the base system if anything is modified and the orbstack meta data might have checks for the OS type
j
gotcha. Thanks for taking the time to explain a bit more 🙂
