why does docker pull ask to access keychain?
# support
p
.
o
perhaps the repo from which you're pulling has some sort of access control, and the docker client recognizes that. I'm just guessing; I don't recall ever seeing this myself.
p
no treally
its a simple python image
r
Normally
docker logout
would be the solution to this if you're pulling public images.
p
can you explain a bit on why it's asking for the credential
r
Because you're logged in.
Note that this has nothing to do with OrbStack.
p
so it's better to
docker logout
than to provide keychain access?
r
When you're logged in, it allows you to access your private images. The token is stored in your keychain.
p
i'll be frank the only reason im askin gall this is because orbstack is closed source
r
Logging in may allow you to bypass Docker Hub's pull limits as well
p
and i dont know if it can access the credential if i allow access
r
Again, this has nothing to do with Orbstack
This has to do with your docker CLI, which may be provided by orbstack, but is the same as you'd get with
brew install docker
p
ohk
r
You'll get entirely the same behavior with any docker provider, including colima or Docker Desktop
p
hmm i was just wondering if orbstack could possibly ship a modified version of
docker
and could access the credentials 🙂
ik it's not doing all that but yk it's closed source so :..
r
You can just use the one from homebrew
p
with orbstack?
r
Yes
p
would u recommend that? or should i just give access
r
It doesn't matter
n
This also depends on your docker configuration file
cat ~/.docker/config.json
By default this is usually set with
"credsStore": "osxkeychain"
r
Detail about credential stores is at https://docs.docker.com/reference/cli/docker/login/
n
As mentioned by rfay, this has nothing to do directly with Orbstack
isn't this wrong then?
> Docker Desktop uses a different credential store (desktop)
> If you use Docker Desktop, credentials are automatically saved to the native keychain of your operating system. on docker official docs
r
It's your config.json that determines the behavior. And what it says there is "automatically saved to native keychain" which is what you're seeing
p
yes and orbstack docs say it saves to a different credentail store (desktop) which is not true
and also > OrbStack uses the open-source macOS keychain credential store (osxkeychain) to store registry credentials securely.
r
osxkeychain is the native keychain. You can configure this as you wish in your .docker/config.json
n
You can use osxkeychain for docker, podman, orbstack, etc
By default some might out of the box write your credentials to the config.json and base64 encode the credential
The osxkeychain is more secure since it's encrypted at rest and requires users to approve other applications than what wrote that credential to access it
p
i understand that . what im saying is that the orbstack docs wrongly claim docker desktop uses a different keychain
because the docker desktop docs clearly mention they use osxkeychain
r
Why don't you explore the keychain to see what's happening? Are you aware that you're complaining to just a couple of random users? Both could use different keys in the same keychain.
n
This really doesn't matter either way, what is in your docker configuration file
~/.docker/config.json
p
sorry i think there's a misunderstanding
i have already gotten my answer before and now not really asking for help. just mentioning that the information in the docs is possibly wrong.
n
So everything is working then for you to pull?
p
yes
r
If you wanted to improve the docs, you'd open an issue in the issue queue. But I'm not sure you're correct. I think the difference is probably "which key in keychain" than "which keychain"
p
i don't know why you sound like you're angry . i definitely thought of opening an issue, in fact even looked up the github org if the docs were open source and i could contribute directly . just mentioned here because we were talking on the same topic. i don't hv any ill intentions and im loving orbstack . thank you 🙂
n
I think the confusion here is that docker doesn't use the keychain the same way as orbstack
And I think the point of that section in the docs is that your docker login stuff in the keychain isn't available in Orbstack so you have to relogin when switching to orbstack
So the page isn't wrong
If you look in your keychain on macos if you previously used docker desktop you will see that for the credential access in access control they are scoped to only allow the
docker-credential-desktop
application to access those secrets
