I'm looking for constructive feedback and feature requests for this observable notebook dashboard template. I have a lot of ideas of complex chart interactions that have been difficult in the notebook format so far. This template solves that problem so I can focus on the actual content. The main features are: • A chart and sidebar that position side by side in landscape and one on top of each other in portrait (mobile) • A shared state a cell, where other cells can
.update
to write to, and
.subscribe
to listen for changes. This allows two way cell interaction and transition without restarting cells. Complex projects can be broken across multiple cells to stay organized and not reach the notebook cell character limit. • A list of state properties to be remembered as cookies, so that part of the state persists across reloads • Full screen option • An input that switches the cells from being displayed in the notebook, or being seen in their own cells (useful for development) For fun, I vibe coded how I see proportional chart types and their relationships. Please rate how tasteful the bounce transitions are 😉 I would really like to see more big projects on observables, and hero visualizations. Let me know if I can improve anything, and if there is a feature that would be useful. https://observablehq.com/d/3c8b082818efd7c9

very cool. One expressivity issue I had is building reusable widgets. When you want multiple copies of the same bit of dataflow. dataflow itself is like building with singletons, there is no way to repeat computation (outside of functions). I specifically made it for dashboards. https://observablehq.com/@tomlarkworthy/dataflow-templating

I'd use transitions and animations sparingly. The novelty wears off quickly and then they simply make every action take longer. For state transitions you may want to consider setting the duration not for individual steps but for the overall animation. (Btw, it seems that the easing is always bounce regardless of the selected option?)

@Fabian hahaha, oh I do use them sparingly, but I enjoyed having fun with this template. I just wanted to make sure the two way coupling between cells and transitions worked. I plan to use this template for totally unrelated projects. Also, you can change the transitions for each edge individually. There should be a variety of transition by default (like stacked <-> violin is easeBackInOut), and if you don't see your selection changing transition behavior, you're probably changing the wrong link.
@Tom Larkworthy, I hadn't considered that. I made this template to work with one big complex dataviz chart with a side panel of settings. I would think if you wanted to clone two charts to view them side by side with this template, you'd need to do that separately first, and then make that multiview cell the 'main' cell. But if you have settings for those multiple views, I'm not sure is a side panel would be the right setup.
