Looking for good public domain samples.

Hi. I play heavy metal, and I like the Slipknot vibes with samples and auxiliary percussion. I use a drum machine, play the bass and guitar by hand, and even have a big kick drum that I could use as the auxiliary percussion. The one thing I don't have is some samples. I like the sounds of glass breaking from the end of "the Heretic Anthem" (Slipknot, Iowa.), I also like the vocal ones, like the "Don't let him get me! Ahhhhh!" sample from the demo version of "Only One" (Slipknot, "Gold Disc" demos). If there is anyone who could guide me to or supply me with some samples and/or sources of samples, I'd greatly appreciate it. Please make sure they're public domain if possible. You technically have to get permission to post it, and that's to much of a hassle at this point in time. Thanks in advance to anyone that is willing to guide me. Sincerely, Jay (#30551)

are you wantin to put these songs up on like a streaming service or soemhting?
r
Absolutely. Music is a true passion.

oh i see
good luck with your thing

Start with freesound, probably
b
100% freesound or any of the other similar sites.
b
you can probably use non-public domain ones, if you're adding some instruments on top and even working the samples into songs than i doubt the owners of them would have anything to be angry over as youre turning it into your own vision
b
Depends what you use really. Its not even about artists in many cases, moreso algorithms and platforms. A friend of mine was sampled by a fairly popular noise/hip-hop act. They took a sample of his music from YouTube. When they released their song YouTube struck him, not them, and claimed he sampled their music. Thankfully the act were chill. He messaged them directly and they sorted it out. But then when the album got released it happened again. All out of their hands. All down to labels and platforms algorithms. But yeah, if you bury it or alter it is most likely going to be fine.
b
oh lol dang that sucks
sorry they had to bother with that slugger
b
It is a pain in the arse. Its happening more too. People are copyrighting their music but not expressing elements are public domain or CC license and that is also causing problems too. Saying all this having literally put a comp track out yesterday using a bunch of samples from a Nic Cage movie. So we will see if I get beat with the naughty stick.
b
i make most of my tracks with samples - 99% i'd say - without even bothering to check if they're free to use, and i've gotten off fine so far
even sampling bands like the temptations
think the only times i've actually sampled anything WITH permission was when i was being asked to remix something
b
Chances are if you're not making money/much money off it it'll be fine either way. Just gotta be aware that you can get stung
b
hmm 🤔 was your friend making money off his track?
b
Yeah
He was pulling in a few thousand a month from YouTube and spotify
But it was his music that was sampled by an act making probably 5 figures a month on streaming
And because they were big and on a notable label he was the one that got stung
b
i figure youre onto something then it does just depend on how popular you get
will check him out if you wanna send his stuff anywhere im a bit curious now
b
Yeah its super weird. From what I gather platforms are having to actively work on this now which is a good thing because its screwing tons of people over in both directions
b
i do kind of have my own methodology for how transformative i should be thou , some cases i'll take a tiny bit of a microsample and effectively just use it as a synth which in that case i guess would be very hard to even detect for a copyright bot
b
Yeah stuff like that is fine I think
Have you got a link to your stuff? Would love to hear it
b
i actually tend to enjoy finding sample flips from producers that i think are less interesting and finding new ways to chop them up and mix them so i guess i shouldn't totally be talking like i'm the average lofi hip hop artist or some such
i can send it in a few for sure
:) now frankly i haven't posted sampled stuff recently , i dont really be on that tip as much but its always nice findin other people who appreciate it
instead of just thinking its lazy
ill send it some other channel though i dont mean to clog here
