Hey, is this the... like... "general" channel? Where you kinda talk but not about a specific subtopic? I'm kinda curious about bioinformatics... Not really too sure where to begin, other than expressing a general interest in genomics, coming from a computer science background primarily.

My best guess is this that is the general channel. I saw someone suggest this on r/bioinformatics the other day, it seems like a pretty well structured learning resource for bioinoformatics beginners. https://bioskillslab.dev/

Thanks for the link! However, as a software engineer I tend to learn through working on and contributing to real projects - perhaps start on the small bugfixing side and slowly learn the domain as I go. I'll still refer to courses of course, but it's more the "getting in contact with the field" I'm struggling with.

I'm just... gonna browse some issue trackers I think - see where that goes

If you want a taster, maybe check out the project board from our recent hackathon - it still has a tonne of open issues on it: https://github.com/orgs/nf-core/projects/146
See also training.nextflow.io for training materials
Technical side note: Slack always has a
#general
channel, but you can rename it. It's the only channel that is impossible for users to remove themselves from, and it's also the only one where you can selectively restrict who can post. For these reasons we renamed ours to #CE6P95170
When the slack started getting big, folks would post stuff in general that would ping thousands of people, which was a bit annoying. At least if it happens a lot in #CE56GDKN0 then people can remove themselves 😅

Oh dang, that's an interesting failure mode 😛
I'm taking a look at the rust-bio and related crates for open issues - seems a good start
