I think nf-core is doing a good job with the current guidelines? Apart from some obvious outliers.. #CGFUX04HZ

I like how no-one points to #CEQBS091V which actually paved the way for #CGFUX04HZ to be in nf-core
Am I trying to shift the blame to @James Fellows Yates, maybe, you can't prove it

@James Fellows Yates doesn’t have a convenient emoji to point to AFAIK 🤣

A plea for descriptive names published in a blog called “Hereby all birds fly” instead of “Salih Muhammed’s Thoughs on Technology and Society”. 😉 And how awk (Aho, Weinberger, Kernighan; the creators’ initials) is good, but Whisper (AI that transcribes audio to text) is bad naming not exactly self-explanatory to me. Great that nobody has introduced him to gene names in Drosophila, it would shatter his conviction that naming was sound and sane in the 1970ies. An argument against it is confusion and typosquatting. Within
nf-core
, there is only one
rnaseq
pipeline, but when it comes to libraries, a typo can suffice and you will add malware to your dependencies. If all the legitimate tools would exist in a very tight, descriptive namespace, the malicious ones could hide much easier.

I don't disagree 😛

> we’ve collectively decided that naming things after random nouns, mythological creatures, or random favorite fictional characters is somehow acceptable professional practice. This would be career suicide in virtually any other technical field Hello, I'd like to introduce you to fly geneticists.

Very timely. I just read this article about acronym issues. https://www.bmj.com/content/349/bmj.g7092 An example mentioned in the paper is METGO
A 48-week, randomized, double-blind, double-observer, placebo-controlled multicenter trial of combination METhotrexate and intramuscular GOld therapy in rheumatoid arthritis: results of the METGO study

Nice. I don't have that close of a relationship, but found Sugarbabe and Torpedo (old name of EGF-R) funny and thus still remember them from the back of my head 20 years later. Toll, the family of immune receptors is named after the German adjective toll which translates to amazing. 😉
