Feedback on Linen messaging

Linen is a public archive for closed communities like Slack. But it is also its own (lightweight) Slack alternative (which I am using to write this message). What is the overlap between these two? I assume a Slack-public-archive does not magically allow the usage like here?
k
Actually it does :D we support two way sync with Slack. So you can sync conversations both ways
j
Interesting. Does that match the Slack user with my GH users or would that be a different one? How would the messages look like in Slack?
k
It would be a different user for the time being. Unless we add some sort of manual process that would let you claim and sync the users

Cool. Does Slack show it all as a "Linen" user or can you create "virtual" users somehow?
But there also is a mode where the public archive is really static? Can it link to a "invite to slack" page and/or the Slack link so you can open threads and channels?
k
Yeah it shows up as an App but with your profile image on it. But with your profile picture here

You can make it static by disabling chat only for Admins in the settings and configuration

You can change the settings to invite to Slack link in the configurations page. https://slack-chats.kotlinlang.org/ Kotlin for example pasted a link to their onboarding form

I think you should highlight these 3 use cases clearly on https://www.linen.dev/:
  1. Full Slack replacement
  2. Public Slack archive
  3. Combination of both
I know you from the past (I'm at Prisma, so we have been observing you obviously :D) and had real trouble to understand when seeing your blog post.
Ok, that invite link is pretty lightweight. I would love to see that in each thread when in "public archive only" mode: Link to the signup, and link to the thread (when signed up). That way the public archive could become a good conversion driver for the Slack community and there would not be such a disconnect.

Thanks for sure. Our product keeps evolving my copy writing hasn't been keeping up lol. But will update the landing page to be clearer soon!

Keep up the good work!
This experience here is neat. Definitely highlight that as well much more, and make it easier to discover. Maybe include a video or animated gif.
What happens in Slack when someone clicks "Post + Close" in a thread here?
k
Nothing in Slack at the moment. The reason we add Close is to have a way of keeping track of threads that are still opened. Since most community becomes a support channel we wanted to make it easy for people to keep track of conversations

Yeah, the bot posting that "USer marked this conversation as closed" might be nice even.
