I'd expect external drives to "just work" with that

    but clearly something is up

disks can be (re)mounted in read only mode if something goes wrong
  • s

    square-angle-35096

    02/03/2023, 3:11 PM
But they don't anymore, for some reason
  • s

    square-angle-35096

    02/03/2023, 3:11 PM
Oop, yeah, the drive is read only
  • s

    square-angle-35096

    02/03/2023, 3:12 PM
I tried to run touch and it gave me an error saying it's read only

is the external drive normally used under windows?
  • a

    able-action-74275

    02/03/2023, 3:12 PM
    e.g. with ntfs/fat32
  • s

    square-angle-35096

    02/03/2023, 3:13 PM
I use it with windows yea
  • s

    square-angle-35096

    02/03/2023, 3:13 PM
But not sure if it is ntfs or fat32
  • a

    able-action-74275

    02/03/2023, 3:13 PM
probably ntfs in this day and age
  • a

    able-action-74275

    02/03/2023, 3:13 PM
and if you used it on windows recently then it might be left in a state where linux won't write to it
  • s

    square-angle-35096

    02/03/2023, 3:13 PM
    Huh..

'ntfs mounting read only' is a Common question in the support subs. Likely reasons..

        filesystem is corrupted.

Filesystem is in a hibernate or suspended state.

windows fast boot, or swap is messing things up.

    02/03/2023, 3:15 PM
worth turning off fast boot for a dual boot system
  • s

    square-angle-35096

    02/03/2023, 3:17 PM
well yeah, i did try to set up dual boot but i ended up running up some trouble with systemd

from here > the Windows-level Fast Startup feature will typically prevent you from mounting the Windows partitions in Linux, since it acts basically the same as hibernating the Windows OS: Linux sees that Windows has not cleanly unmounted the Windows partitions and so some cached data might held in the hibernation data, waiting to be written to its final place in the Windows filesystem
