Greetings and Happy Thursday! We are aware that there is uncertainty in the community about Grails 7 and the path forward. We have assembled the starting point for a Grails Community Steering Committee which is a group of folks helping define the path forward. The group is made up of representatives from the community who are passionate about and able to help us define the way forward. We will be reaching out to some more folks for input and inclusion in the group. The group will be publishing meeting minutes to create transparency. Visibility into what the challenges are and what the options are for moving forward will help the community and enterprises agree on how to move forward. Look for more information in the coming days and when you see opportunities to contribute, please speak up. We really are working on defining the best path forward. Thank you for being a part of this community!

Been working with grails for a while, and I feel it has lost some momentum and it's been behind a little bit (for instance from the latest jdk support and in IDE support). Right now I have more questions than proposals for the future. I still love grails, and if there is an open discussion, I would like to participate as a listener. Thanks.

Similar than pablo. I still believe in helping grails. I also I would like to participate at least as a listener. Thanks

Good afternoon everyone, I'd be more than happy to help on the future of Grails. I've used it since 2008 on most of my projects. 🚀

Thank you for your message @jeffscottbrown. In the last 5 years we've built a framework on top of Grails to develop backoffice web applications with just one language, Groovy (https://dueuno.com). I'm getting ready to release its source code under the Apache Licence in the next weeks, so I'd love Grails to live healty in the future and willing to give my contribution. As a priority I would suggest to invest in updating all the dependences for security reasons. GORM can wait the upgrade to Hibernate 6. My peronal opinion on this issue is that most of the Grails users won't be scared about using a "consolidated well designed API" to access databases. Database performance is not a problem at the moment and we all know we have workarounds in case we need more performances. While "security" and "staying relevant" is somehting we all need now, not tomorrow.

I've been using grails since 2014 and, despite the current issues, I still believe it's the best web framework in the java/groovy world. Sure, its popularity has dropped over the years, but I think we have a great opportunity to set the stage for its future. In order to achieve that we need to define a clear roadmap and improve the contributing guidelines to encouraging a more active participation from the community. I've allways choosen grails over his alternatives due to his convention over configuration approach, plus gorm, gsp and gson among other features that makes grails a robust and efficient framework. I know we all've some great ideas about the future of grails and if there's and open discussion I'ld like to share my point of view or just listen to others.

@giangio I agree with you. There is a focus on addressing security in particular. Thank you for the input!

@richardv "...if there's and open discussion I'ld like to share my point of view or just listen to others" - Please do! Do folks here have a preference for what channel that type of input should be shared?
r
Not that I'm aware but we could define one specific for this discussion so in that way we centralize all the informations, opinions and discussion.
@sbglasius posted your original message in #random cause this channel isn't open to everyone so could use it or create a new one
s
@richardv we could open #general as long as it's not used for technical questions
r
That'd be great, maybe you have to clarify that at the moment you open the channel
p
There is a channel description field that can be used to describe the purpose of the channel

where is this group getting comments from grails useres?
j
Currently slack and some emails. There will likely be a survey shared with the user base in coming weeks to collect organized feedback.

A survey would be great
