I suspect there's more to my problem that is immediately apparent. I took the approach of creating a new project and then moving things over bit by bit... so when I've only domains, src, services and views, it does actually compile fully.. when I attempt to bring over the controllers, that's when it goes into nowhere land and after 7/8 minutes gives up with out of memory messages.. I think that's misleading and there's actually some issue with one of the controllers... no idea how to find it though since it doesn't give a compilation error,
