@Dónal Yeah that does make sense as a factor, even if it's a silly one from my point of view, because, since Grails 3, Grails is Spring Boot, but is much more productive, because of the convention over configuration(which some term magic). Also, There is a greater segment that prefers Java over Groovy, and it would make sense that that segment would prefer Spring Boot over Groovy. IMO I have yet to find a more powerful, expressive, and productive combination, then Groovy and Grails.
