This heavily depends on multiple factors. If you use UTF-8 for your files, you need to tell the various tasks to use it to read the files, for example
JavaCompile
task,
JavaDoc
task, ... If you don't, then the default is used. And the default - unless you are on a recent version of Java - is the system default encoding which on Windows often is
ISO-8859-1
but can also be something different. If IntelliJ has UTF-8 configured and you do not delegate compilation to Gradle, it of course uses the right encoding for the compiler. An alternative is, to not use such characters, but to use Unicode Escapes
\u....
for characters not the same in the typical encodings.

Aha, I see, thank you so much. I am new at a work place and trying to migrate the build to Gradle, not sure if it is easy for me to change that character in a file but I can for sure try ask. For now let me try the JavaCompille task. Indeed we are still on Java 11 🙂
