Iirc it is only used for the publishing task names

The only thing it is used for it to name the tasks that do the publication (the uploading). Gradle creates one task per "publication+repository" combination.

Unless you somehow refer to these tasks by name in your configuration, it does not matter.

So yes, you can set it to something generic.
