The error means something is wrong within
android { ... }
. Unfortunately, with Groovy DSL you often get such absolutely unhelpful errors that do not point to the concrete problem due to the dynamic nature of the Groovy language. To find the problem, comment out everything in
android { ... }
and then comment in "random" things to find out when it breaks with that error. As a general recommendation I can highly recommend using Kotlin DSL instead. By now it is the default DSL, you immediately get type-safe build scripts, actually helpful error message if you mess up the syntax, and amazingly better IDE support if you use a proper IDE like IntelliJ IDEA.
