YNAB question - I'm getting extremely confused with how CCs are handled - the Assigned and Available columns are acting very strange. For instance, I have a card that is fully paid so the 'Available' is 0.00, which makes sense, but the 'Assigned' is -50.00. I have no idea what's going on with it.
a
It sounds like maybe your payment was $50 more than the credit card spending that was funded in this months budget. See here for details: https://support.ynab.com/en_us/credit-card-activity-an-overview-Sk2mLluA9

Ok so I still need to wrap my head around the assigned vs activity but it sounds like as long as Available is reconciled than everything is fine. Thanks
a
was it actually the assigned column that showed -50 or the activity column?
b
assigned. Activity was 50.
I guess maybe there was a refund somewhere so I didn't need anything assigned for 50.
a
also, just to be clear, you want to make sure none of your budget categories are showing overspending so that the "Available" amount will automatically cover all your spending (=your card balance)
b
Ya there is another card which is similar except that I haven't paid it off yet. E.g. the assigned is -100 and the activity is +100, so Available is 0. However, I haven't paid it off yet so I technically owe 100 but it's not complaining.
a
oh I don't think your want your credit card assigned to be negative. that essentially means that your "ready to assign" budget amount is borrowing from the cc
b
Right but when I assign 50 it says I have 100 available for payment but I don't actually owe anything
I.e. assigned is +50 and activity is +50 so available = 100
Maybe the account is misreconciled
a
yes, that would make sense... assigning +50 is essentially saying you want to pay extra, over the +50 of activity that was already covered in your budget.
b
Right. When I set assigned to 0 then available is 50 which is incorrect. I must have to reconcile something, though in the account tab the balance is 0 which is correct.
a
i'm not sure available = 50 is incorrect... it might be for spending in this months budget that will be on your next cc billing cycle
b
All my cards seem to be off, I must have done something wrong with all of them.
a
this seems a bit confusing so you might want to check the their help center and read through how they handle CC's Just one important point that might explain it all - when your spend with your CC and it's covered in your budget, they will automatically move the money from that category to the "available" column for the credit card. It is automatically assigned. so you do not need to assign it using the "assign column". the assigned column is for moves your want to make beyond your budgeted spending.

I assume it has to do with coming into the month with a debt. The activity just calculates the current months activity. So if started the month -100 in debt and I got a +50 refund my activity would be +50 but my debt would still be -50.
I'll work through it but this was very helpful, as well as the link. Thanks

Please come back to this thread and ask for more help if it doesn't get resolved. It's easy to get ynab burnout but we are here for you!

To close the loop on this, I haven't received an email back from them but I calculated the amount I have ready to assign/already assigned and it totals the money in my budget accounts. I don't know why if the activity balance is negative then I need to assign money to the account to get the payment balance to 0, I need to look more into the significance of those columns. In any event, my payment balances are correct and the ready to assign + already assigned amount equals my account balances so everything should be good moving forward. Thanks for the help
