Ideas on how we can get more frum people to join our slack so we can spread financial awareness?

Slack is generally unknown/scary to non-techies. It's a tough question. Non-techies like WhatsApp, but that's not a great fit here. Maybe a WhatsApp community?
m
I was waiting to see the WhatsApp community feature before launching the slack group. The WhatsApp community feature the way they currently implemented. It is not a good fit for this type of group because you would end up with 15 groups that are a part of in your WhatsApp feed, which is not a good experience for anyone. It also doesn't let you compartmentalize this out so that it doesn't interfere with your normal personal WhatsApp list of chats. It also has a smaller limit per chat than we are looking for here. The list goes on. Other platforms might be a good idea, but I couldn't find anything that came close to slack. The current implementation of WhatsApp communities I think is definitely a bad idea
r
A website / newsletter is also a good idea. There are many people who will not use WhatsApp or Slack for this. Here is an example: https://livingsmarterjewish.org/contents/
m
So bh our website has been very successful, frum.finance in helping people reach out to get the resources they need. I'm specifically asking how we can grow our slack community where people can lean on each other to learn so that we can lessen the load on our volunteer staff and encourage the community to help each other
r
That’s just a static site, we need content - a Substack newsletter weekly which also posts to the web is something I am thinking of.
m
So I'm actually launching a substack newsletter soon, working on the content.
So totally agree.
But I still think communication and collaboration of our community is The only way to make real long-standing change for our community. People don't read their emails enough. I'm planning to make the substack and I think it all help some people, but I think if we want to really help the community in an incredible way, we need to encourage thousands of people to be discussing finance openly and honestly in a forum like slack
We need to help each other and we can't rely on non-profits to swoop in and help people when things go wrong. We need proactive community engagement and open and honest dialogue
The ChooseFI community for example is over 100,000 people talking online helping each other with their finances
I think we can do the same
We need to make it normal for people to collaborate and discuss honestly their financial situations. There are people that don't believe me that a Roth IRA is even a real thing. There are people that honestly believe life insurance is a scam. We need to start creating an open dialogue so people can learn.

Multiple marketing channels
m
Our slack does have multiple channels
Or if you're saying multiple ways of reaching people, that's why I am going to start the substack anyway I am saying.
But my question here is how can we grow this medium.
My question in a few weeks is going to be how do we grow the substack. One thing at a time 😁
Just like I started with one on one meetings to see to see if this was really possible. And now we have dozens of people off government benefits, out of debt, or with investment portfolio that never invested before. Actively advising multiple millions of dollars of retirement investing. But what We are currently doing is not scalable. It also doesn't work as a retreat or as a big presentation because finance is far too personal for one talk to speak to everyone. So we need to grow it while it remains personal which requires all of us to help each other and to educate each other.
Which is how the FI community has been so successful changing so many people's lives. By creating a community.
So yes, we need a newsletter. But we need more is a community in my mind.
ChooseFI uses Facebook for this, which I don't think would be a good idea for our community. So I'm giving slack a shot πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
Thoughts? I'm open to adjusting my approach here

Guest on podcasts, and direct people somewhere they can join Slack from.

Is there a podcast that most frum people listen to? The only big one I can think of is headlines.
If everyone in this chat invited 10 friends we would have over a thousand people 😁
n
I can easily invite the ~100 people who usually view my WhatsApp status, however I'd be shocked if anyone actually joined. Selling someone on a new app/ecosystem is tough. Memories of the "abandon WhatsApp, switch to telegram" days...
m
At least 10 people in this chat of joined from my WhatsApp status I think
But yeah I agree
n
I doubt I would get anything near that. You probably have far more contacts who are likely to be interested in a) slack; and b) personal finance πŸ˜€
m
Haha could be but I've been surprised.
