Hi, in ynab I’m trying to understand what I read about credit cards from previous months having negative balances and their color being red. As long as none of my other (non-credit card) categories did not go into negative (or I corrected them already so they are now $0.00 or more), everything is running the way it is supposed to be?

It makes sense for the balance to be red since you haven’t paid it yet. Your second paragraph is the exact qualifier I would write to explain the conditions that make this be correct, so you are all good!

Thank you. Let’s say one starts a new credit card out with a $200.00 balance and makes purchases of another $200.00 between 1/15-2/15. On 2/15 he will have a positive balance of $400.00 but ynab will only show $200.00. So if he makes a $400.00 payment on 2/16 then he will have a negative balance. But if he makes more purchases of over $200.00 before the end of the month then he will have a positive balance.
Hmm, that example didn’t seem to explain it as it was not a real life example and the logic doesn’t match up to what I actually see in ynab. The first month I started assigning money I entered my credit card balance and what ever purchases I made until a certain date and then made a payment for the full balance. Then I made more purchases until the end of the month. I would have thought that should have added money to the available column of the credit card. But for some reason it is in the negative and red for that month.
Ok I think what happened is that I didn’t allocate funds for the initial credit card balance when I first brought it into ynab. I guess I still need to do that.
Actually now I’m not so sure that will help. Because I added both beginning CC balances together and expected that if I added all the current month’s available money + what I have in Ready to Assign, that I would be off by the amount of those CC balances. But I’m not. I’m off by a very small amount that might be from some random charge that is somehow not being taken into account. Perhaps I messed things up in other previous months by assigning money to credit cards when I didn’t have to/wasn’t supposed to.
