And open source generative image AI was released some time ago so if anything was going to happen you would have already noticed it

are we using the same units though? admittedly dont know much about mining at this point. Will the demand from those industrial services suck up all the supply of GPUs? Or are Nvidia + it's competitors able to produce enough for this to not matter?

my question is more about will miners be able to purchase GPUs if some of these mega cap companies dive head first into AI and suck up all the GPUs on the market? Is that something that can happen? Or is the manufacturing infrastructure strong enough to ramp up sufficiently?

It's happening. You can hear the whole AI congress hearing. They will go to regulate chips, is the only chokepoint/leverage they have

Worst-worst case scenario you can always route around it

When monero discovered its mining algo was broken, they built a new one and replaced it

At the end of the day the community, nodes runners and core devs have the final say

Once the networks effect are in, you can't kill the chain even with GPU regulation. You can just go to CPU or rebuild the GPU algo into a lincesed architecture like unreal or whatever. I do see it as a problem but a solvable problem nonetheless.
