@kapa.ai We are running Elementary in a containerized environment where outbound internet access is intentionally disabled. We noticed that Elementary is attempting to connect to PostHog:
HTTPSConnectionPool(host='<http://app.posthog.com|app.posthog.com>', port=443): Max retries exceeded with url: /batch/
This results in multiple retries and delays:
Backing off send_request(...)
Giving up send_request(...) after 4 tries
We would like Elementary to operate completely offline, without attempting any external network connections or telemetry. Could you please let us know: 1. Is there a supported configuration/environment variable to completely disable PostHog/telemetry? 2. If so, what is the recommended configuration for Elementary CLI 0.25.0? 3. Does disabling telemetry have any impact on Elementary's core functionality or dbt operations? 4. Is there any other outbound network communication that Elementary 0.25.0 may attempt, so that we can ensure the container remains fully offline? We are also seeing this warning:
You are using incompatible versions between edr (0.25.0) and Elementary's dbt package (0.19.0).
Could you also confirm which Elementary dbt package version is recommended/compatible with
edr==0.25.0
? Our requirement is that the container must not make any outbound internet connections, so we would appreciate the recommended configuration for a fully offline/restricted environment. Thanks!

Thinking completed Great set of questions. Here's what the knowledge sources say for each point: 1. Disabling PostHog / Telemetry There is no environment variable documented for this. The supported method is a config file setting: Add the following to your
~/.edr/config.yml
(or a custom config directory):
anonymous_usage_tracking: False
Then pass the config location when running the CLI:
edr report --config-dir /path/to/your/edr/config/dir
[CLI config docs] > Important: There was a known bug where even with
anonymous_usage_tracking: False
, one residual call was still being made to PostHog. This was fixed in PR #2001. Make sure you are on a version that includes this fix. The retries and backoff you are seeing are consistent with this bug. [Slack thread] 2. Recommended Configuration for a Fully Offline Environment In addition to disabling telemetry,
edr report
also runs
dbt deps
internally to download dbt packages from
hub.getdbt.com
. In a no-internet environment, this will also fail with connection errors and delays. The recommended fix is to pre-populate the internal dbt project's
dbt_packages
directory during your Docker image build
(on a machine with internet access):
dbt deps --project-dir /usr/local/lib/python3.9/site-packages/elementary/monitor/dbt_project
This bundles the packages into the image so
edr
won't attempt to download them at runtime. [Slack: ECS egress] 3. Impact on Core Functionality Disabling
anonymous_usage_tracking
has no impact on Elementary's core functionality or dbt operations. The tracking only covers anonymous metadata (start/end events, platform, number of queries, graph size) — no credentials, query content, or table names are ever sent. [CLI config docs] 4. Other Outbound Network Connections Based on the knowledge sources, the two main sources of outbound network traffic from Elementary are: [Slack: ECS environment] 5. Compatible dbt Package Version for edr 0.25.0 The knowledge sources do not explicitly document the exact compatibility matrix between
edr
CLI versions and dbt package versions. However, the current documented dbt package version in the Elementary docs is 0.25.1, strongly suggesting the CLI and dbt package are intended to be kept on matching (or very close) versions. [dbt package install] Your warning (
edr 0.25.0
vs dbt package
0.19.0
) indicates a significant version mismatch. The recommendation would be to upgrade your Elementary dbt package to
0.25.1
(the version shown in the current docs) to align with your CLI version. I'd recommend confirming the exact compatibility pairing in the Elementary release notes or reaching out to the Elementary team directly, as this specific mapping is not detailed in the available knowledge sources. 👍 0 button 👎 0 button â„šī¸ Tip: Mention @elementary.ai in the thread for follow-ups or DM the app for 1-to-1 help., with interactive elements
