Hey guys, I’m facing an issue on the web interface and wanted to know if anyone has a clue. On the top menu, when I click on the profile icon, should have the datahub’s tag, but shows “null”. Is there a parameter that should have been set during deployment for it to work? Where does this value come from? Does anyone know where in the github repository can I find the creation of this component? Any idea on what is going on? Thanks!!

hey julia! yeah right there should be the version of datahub that you're on based on the version of datahub you've pulled and deployed. how are you deploying datahub?
specifically with helm or with docker-compose?
k
@bulky-soccer-26729 I’m deploying it using helm (datahub v0.9.5 and datahub-helm 0.2.126 from acryldata). I’m also building the images, so maybe I’ve messed something up without noticing it… But I’m feeling that it is something related with the environment, not the source code…
b
yeah this is definitely an environment thing and not source code related, but I'm a little hazy on how exactly we get this value to pass into our configs and why it wouldn't be there. i'll ask around and see if I can get you an answer soon!
k
Thank you so much! I’ll let you know if I figure something out too
b
iirc it is related to git tags during CI/CD
k
@better-orange-49102 I don’t know exactly what it means… Can you describe it or send me some references please?
b
This was the PR https://github.com/datahub-project/datahub/pull/3866/filesfiles that added the versioning in UI.
k
Thanks, I’ll take a look at it
This PR helped me to understand where this menu is generated, but I still haven’t figured out what’s wrong. This gitVersion is related to what? Is there a variable that has to be set in the k8s pod to make it work?
b
hey Julia! sorry for the delay on this one but I think i have some more info for you
so this value is ultimately populated as
git.commit.id
which comes from
git.properties
in the
datahub-frontend-<version>.jar
which is created during build. Part of our GHA flow fetches all the commit IDs which populate that file during the build. so if you're creating your own custom images, it might omit this step, or something might be wrong with it, so that you're not generating that version.jar file and we don't have that commit id to get the version from
k
It makes sense. I am not running the github actions. In this case, what is your suggestion? I feel that changing all the source code referencing this gitVersion wouldn’t be the best option… What do you think?
b
yeah I would agree that changing the source code wouldn't be great. are you not able to run this action necessary to build the file to get this value?
k
I’m not sure. I am using azure devops as ci/cd tool rather than github actions. I really don’t know how to run the github actions’ workflow on azure devops or even if it’s possible
I’ll look for something on the microsoft docs that might clear it out. Thanks for all your help, now I know where is the problem!!
