Has anyone made the switch from content marketing to product marketing? I’d love to hear about your experience. And any PM-related courses you recommend? I’m realizing ~8 years into my career as a content marketer (mostly at startups, meaning I did a bit of everything) that the things I love most about content marketing are actually more related to PM—messaging, positioning, case studies, customer research, and competitive analysis—and I’m looking into making a formal switch.

Good to know I'm not the only one. I've been looking into the same for the last couple of months. I've always worn all the hats!

For learning purposes, not for a career move, I attended a PMA conference in San Francisco a few years ago. Then maybe a year later, during the pandemic, I watched parts of one of the conferences online. Good content. I’d suggest attending one. You might be able to use a learning and development stipend or such toward the costs, if your company offers them. My company paid my way.

@big-flag-47024 I'm going through a similar phase, pivoting my career into Product Marketing. Let me share my experience: I work in a startup (the product is yet to hit the market, a small team of 5), and the target customers are product marketers. I report directly to the CEO who has almost 11 years of experience as a PMM. A few days after I joined as a Writer, he told me not to confine myself to the role of a writer but move into Content Marketing, and then Product Marketing (if it interests me). Recently, I told him I'd like to be involved in Product Marketing related work, and he was more than willing to train me. So, now I'll get some experience regarding PMM works apart from creating content for the blog. The reason I tell you all this is that the best way to get hired as a PMM from Content Marketing is by asking for the role within the company. I think it would work well in a startup because apart from positioning and messaging, PMMs are responsible for creating content for the blog until a dedicated content team is in place. I believe that would be a great start, and you can pivot from there. A few things he told me so far: 1. Be obsessed with numbers: know what KPIs you need to track (unable to tell you more, maybe I can after a few weeks/a month). Rather than the number of deliverables, it's all about the impact they are making on the organizational level revenue and growth goals. 2. Read more on PM-related topics/books and get some understanding 3. He gave me a brief into what's positioning and messaging, and the roles PMMs typically play in an organization (it's much better to hear from a PMM than reading from an article because you can ask doubts right away) Of course, I'm lucky in some ways (writing for PMMs, the CEO has trained PMMs before). Still, I'd highly recommend asking within the company and making your way into, I don't know, demand-gen maybe.

Hi @big-flag-47024 Happy to connect with you. I to shifted from working as the content lead for the marketing team to heading overall marketing. I can't recommend any courses but for me, reading books and listening to podcasts have proved to be really useful. They not only helped me learn the basics of product marketing but also gave me insight into the current trends of the industry, actionable strategies and real-life-experience advice from industry experts. I recently wrote a blog that sums up some of the most incredible product marketing podcasts that I find to be very resourceful and help me stay at the top of my game. I hope it helps: https://www.contentbeta.com/top-10-b2b-saas-product-marketing-podcasts/ Also, here are my top 5 book recommendations for product marketing and management: 1. Product-led Growth by Wes Bush 2. Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind by Ries and Trout 3. To Sell is Human by Daniel H. Pink 4. Crossing The Chasm by Geoffrey Moore 5. Hooked by Nir Eyal Hope this helps.
