Career advice question… I started a new job on August 8th. I already had planned vacation time prior to accepting the new job. The week vacation was September 13th week. I ended up working 3 days anyways due to migrations. Then, Hurricane Ian hit last week so I didn’t work the majority of the week. Today, I found out my grandma is passing in the next few days. I’m flying out to Buffalo tomorrow. My mom just got out of surgery so I have to help her get on the flight and drive her as she can’t walk. I feel nervous to ask for time off for this since I’ve taken so much time off. I wasn’t planning to tell my boss because I don’t want it to look badly on me. Should I tell my new boss? How do I approach this situation? I never take time off normally so this is a new area for me.

Absolutely tell your boss, they'll understand. Everyone has had a mom and grandma and should empathize...

Tell your boss for sure. If they don't accommodate for this situation, it's not a company you want to work for anyway 🙂

Don't sweat it. Life happens, it's more important that you are there for your family. Your boss can either choose to empathize with your situation and trust you, or he/she can not. That's up to them. Focus on what you can control, being there for your loved ones and communicating honestly with your employer.

Oh love, sounds like it’s pouring in your world. Your life, well-being and being present for yourself and your family are SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT than your job. It will be there when you get back. And, if they handle it poorly, then it’s a great flag for you to know it’s not a supportive place for you.

P.S. take more time off 🙂 never taking any time to reset and recharge is dangerous. Sending good vibes your way.
