Hi everyone! I’ve been looking for some useful resources on newsletter writing. But nothing seemed super helpful to me. I’m sure we have a lot of content experts among us that share weekly newsletters. Would be grateful for your tips and suggestions. Tagging @powerful-salesclerk-66243 @stocky-zebra-68352 , @wooden-engine-33952.

How about this one from Ann Handley? → https://annhandley.com/ah/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/ah_100news.pdf 🙂

Ah yes, Ann can definitely be of help. Any particular aspects of newsletter writing you find challenging?

I know this is not explicitly what you’re looking for, but it’s still interesting. Howard Hudson wrote a book on writing newsletters in 1982. And while the medium’s changed (email vs. paper), the concept is the same. It’s cool to peruse!

I experimented a ton with the format of my newsletter. I used to write long form essays specifically for the newsletter. Wasn't sustainable. Eventually I settled on a somewhat structured format that was fun for me to write (super important since it's a personal newsletter and I don't necessarily have to do it). I just looked at inspiration from the newsletters I enjoy and took a lot of the formatting from Justin Mares' newsletter https://justinmares.com/newsletter/

@loud-pencil-56548, I struggled mostly with formatting, coming up with topics, and adding super-valuable information for the reader.
@stocky-zebra-68352, can’t thank you enough for sharing Ann’s guide. It’s exactly what I need.

@wooden-engine-33952, thank you so much for sharing the newsletter reference. What would you suggest when the client wants the newsletter content to be authoritative but there’s no internal SME in their team? Also, they aren’t open to interviewing external experts.
@best-state-66177, thanks for recommending this book. Gonna go through this rn.

I struggle with it, too, honestly and get a lot of help from the WorkWeek team on it. The founders were a big part of The Hustle from founding to acquisition and have a good handle on that stuff. The format I follow now is intro. Essay (on any topic really...). And then two sections of personal info like "Other content I like" and "What I'm watching, what I'm eating, etc" Folks respond mostly to the personal stuff which is cool - because that means they are reading aallll the way down to the end!

For weeks where it was been particularly hard to come up with something (like this week!), I'm doing a round up of the last week's since a bunch of folks have joined since I first started publishing. And then, I'll start doing Q&As soon too (Like with Fio, but I couldn't get her Qs before her vacation!!)

Hey @white-cpu-69011 what are your goals for the newsletter? I'd start there and then experiment with different formats for a bit to see what moves the needle. For example, if you're intent is to share expertise or educate the audience, you could experiment with a longer-form newsletter (education and tips in the newsletter body); medium format (summary of education and tips; offering some takeaways and elaborate on a landing page); or a short-form (digestible and very fast-hitting overview, but the recipient moves to the blog or LP to get the key takeaways). This is just one example, but framing options up against your goals can help you start, and learn from there.
