Wasn't sure if this was already shared, but really love this breakdown of content marketing skills to prioritize as you level up your career. Was created by Contentment's newsletter writer Tracey Wallace I believe https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rGQDWSuf-Q-M0bhxF_gYMNfiU71540zMMgVkwZjkqz8/edit#gid=0

Interesting share, thank you! I’ve been thinking a lot about career progression after the Senior Content Strategist/Marketing Manager stage. I feel like there’s two paths: the stick-to-content path at big organizations with huge marketing teams that delineate very clearly between marketing roles. Or the senior generalist/CMO/CGO path, where you master content and then extend horizontally into other areas (e.g. growth, product, etc.). For example, at a startup, you’re likely not going to have a senior role dedicated to content only.

@glamorous-wall-41322 Your explanation is spot on. This is actually why I moved into SEO from my last series of content roles. I see more director-level SEO opportunities, plus I think using that as a jumping point into a generalist CMO/VP role might work well as people will assume I have more "technical skills" to bring to the table (whether or not that's actually true 😅). I see you're in a Content Lead role now. Can I dm you a few questions about it?

Sure thing, David!

this is interesting but it's so specific that it's going to be very organization-dependent, so i'd use it as an interesting example and not a guide for planning a career
