This may be a long shot. I'm flying to San Francisco for an interview next week in FiDi. I'll be there 9/1 and 9/2. Is there anyone local I could buy a coffee for and chat with about entry/early career level content marketing job opportunities or recruiters in SF? Trying to make the most of the trip before coming home to SD.😅

I looked at your LinkedIn profile and don’t think a mtg like this would be productive to most hiring mgrs or recruiters. You’re probably better off reading some of the pieces that people here have shared on various threads about how to get started as a freelancer or such. Something you might want to be careful of when you’ve not written for money before: Various dodgy people / companies will try to exploit you. That’s why it can be worthwhile to set boundaries early on about what you’re willing or not willing to do, agnostic of any specific opportunities or “opportunities.” Many people don’t do this and it makes them more vulnerable to exploitation.

Also worth considering: More and more content jobs are remote nowadays, so there’s no reason to meet San Francisco hiring mgrs or recruiters in particular. And such mtgs can be done via Zoom anyway. FWIW, you’re more likely to have luck with employers outside of the Bay Area and NYC. Why: Many coastal companies tend to pay better, so they tend to get more applicants and can be more selective. In such cases, people without experience will not be competitive for the stronger jobs and will tend to be pursued by companies that are more likely to be exploitative.

Maggie, thank you for the honest and thoughtful feedback. I've already encountered some of the dodgy businesses you mentioned and steered clear. I'll look for articles on setting those boundaries and recognizing what is and isn't fair compensation. Even if I'd like to be able to live in SF at some point, right now my strategy can be flexible.
