In my current role at we've slowly been building our influencer marketing program and it was definitely a good idea to start small. At a high level, here are the steps we followed:
• Define the type of influencer we're looking for (their values, characteristics of their audience, etc.)
• Research, grade, and vet influencers via an interview process to confirm there's alignment with the brand and they feel a resonance with our mission.
• Commit to a defined content series and try multiple mediums (i.e. TikTok video, IG story, IG reel). Align this to a content or product launch (this is key). I think we've had some early top of funnel success (ie traffic + ebook downloads) because the story the influencer was telling was continued when they got to our social handles/website. We always had a clear CTA and trackable links.
• Learning: better (for my current company) as a brand awareness play vs. direct lead gen. This might be different with lower cost e-commerce products. But we sell high-end education products. Be ready to invest at least 6-10k for a good influencer + a 6-8 week campaign. It's $$$, and some influencers have a much more engaged audience than others. Look for engagement as a key factor when you're vetting them.
