Hello everyone, what's the typical rate for rewriting a 2000-word blog post? I need some 💡
f
I'd charge $400.

I don't think you should bother about the rate, Nelson. Bother about the your unique offer for rewriting. Are you only doing grammatical correction? Structure reconstruction? Would it require you to make further research? If I'd have to make further research and do some (intense) struture reconstruction, I won't charge less than $1000 for the same 2000 words in a B2B industry. ▪︎ The rate also depends on your experience as a writer. But if you are sure of what you deliver, you can't afford to charge petty bucks. ▪︎ The rate also depends on the industry, B2C or B2B?

@few-toddler-58939 Thanks for the info
@gifted-secretary-69955 I was thinking along the same line. The work covers structure reconstruction and new research to fresh the page. Also, B2C content.

@bright-petabyte-84251 have you seen the piece to be rewritten yet? I would make that a requirement before quoting. I have been in many situations where I'm asked to just "punch things up" or do "minor edits" that turned out to be a major rewrite because the original author was vastly overestimating their skills
Since then I've flatly turned down rewrites if it involves too much work. Sometimes it's better to burn it all down and start over rather than edit a piece that is fundamentally flawed

@gentle-dress-37057 I've seen the piece and it looks a bit shaky - not over the board though. A few tweaks should do it. But I'd have to replace a whole section and add some newer research.

@bright-petabyte-84251 my usual go-to is price based on the time you think it will take to get done, not on the amount of words. I suggest you find out what your per-hour rate is and multiply based off of that
b
100% depends on the amount of rewriting. If you're gonna have to rewrite everything, you should definitely be charging more.
b
I guess I'd have to charge more then.😅
Thanks everybody

I did a huge re-write project once where we needed to either tweak or re-write 50 posts. Some were 15 minutes of work. Some were complete re-writes. I normally charge by the piece, but it made more sense to charge by the hour in that case with an agreed-upon maximum monthly budget.

@glamorous-wall-41322 thanks for the info, appreciated. What should a not-so-expert-but-right-up-there writer charge per hour though?🥶
g
I know this is a deeply unsatisfying answer, but that’s for you to decide. What is it worth to you? What is it worth to your client? I used to charge $30/hr, then $50, then $100, etc. for what’s technically the same work. Over time, I decided I was worth more based on my expertise, quality, etc. I also work with clients with bigger budgets now, for whom the time savings and results are worth the higher rates. So it’s a bit of a feeling out process.

@gentle-dress-37057 Love your insights on how to approach the pricing model when it gets to the details.
