if I'm understanding you correctly, you have a short video that is played on loop on your website? I asked this here without getting a reply: https://discord.com/channels/595317990191398933/893253103695065128/938024163891884054

doesn't make any sense for a video to count multiple times if it's stored in the browser at least

Yes that's right (among other vids, but this was my example). I must admit I was surprised that the looping video didn't cache. I managed to notch up about 80000 minutes of stream due to a couple of tiny looping videos (open on a couple of peoples browsers). But I'm no pro and I clearly didn't fully understand the purpose of CF Stream.

Crap. Small, looping videos is exactly what we intend to use CF Stream for 😧

Btw, were you using the player, or just a video tag?
  • p

Just the video tag. I actually didn't realise there was a player - looking at it now.

You could (possibly) find a player that caches the segments?

Thought perhaps the browser would cache this by default? 🤔

Hrm, it should be cached by the browser — the
    cache-control
header is set on the segment response. In any case, for videos this short it's not worth the extra cost of loading a player, manifest, and then loading segments. You'll have a better time using an
    .mp4
    directly with the
    <video />
    element. https://developers.cloudflare.com/stream/viewing-videos/download-videos/

thank you for the detailed response! when you talk about "cost" here, are you talking about billed usage for CF Stream, or just bandwidth and load speed for the end-user? in my experience, one of the huge benefits of streaming, is that you can (almost) immediately begin playing the video in a low quality, and then upgrade the quality to the one best suited to the users connection afterwards, bringing the best of both perceived speed and final video quality

no talk about the WebRTC stuff this Innovation Week, is it waiting on other things like Stream or ???

Ah, sorry! Given the context that's important to clarify. I was describing the bandwidth and load speed for the end user. Billing is calculated the same way for both "mp4 download" and streamed video — in minutes delivered.

Hi! How does billing work for Simulcasting? (It doesn't appear to say in the docs) Is it the same as the $1/1000 minutes of delivered or is it something else?
  • t

    tt2468

    05/17/2022, 6:56 PM
I believe it should still fall under the minutes delivered. If you have 3 outputs, you'll pay for
    input mins * 3
    minutes

right, thank you for clarifying! I'm struggling to see how a couple of looping videos could rack up 80k minutes (ref. https://discord.com/channels/595317990191398933/893253103695065128/975783858781962260), as per my testing the videos are cached unless caching is disabled

just tried loading a 7s video twice without cache, and it's displayed in the analytics as 2 minutes served. this seems less than ideal.

The CF Stream pricing doesn't mention anywhere that the minutes are aggressively rounded up to the closest minute, nor can I find this listed in the supplemental terms for CF Stream and CF Images

@poacher2k do you have a link you can share (via DM) that we might be able to help take a look at to see if we can identify anything on the client side?
