For real, all the cloudflare free package is too good to be true, where is the catch? Free pages, free SSL, free dns, free caching, free bandwidth, there Must be a catch, right?

cloudflare generates enough revenue from paying and enterprise customers that they can offer a very generous free plan to hobbyists and small businesses

there are still certain components on the free plans that become paid after a while, so for workers you get a free 100,000 requests a day but that is more than plenty for the vast majority of use cases

they give people a great free plan, and they could end up with enterprise customers out of it

a lot of their paid customers either were previously free customers or were recommended it by free customers

then recommend Cloudflare to their employer, and their employer ends up on a business or enterprise plan

also free zones give them lots of data about traffic and ddos attacks which ends up benefiting the paid customers

they know more about what normal traffic looks like and more about how to stop different types of attacks properly

and the paid customers pay for the free customers

which in turn makes it better for paid customers so CF really has nothing to lose

I might get pro plan in the future if I get some donations, in the meanwhile I'm moving static websites to cloudflare pages and keep the VPS only for API

I love how that post from Matthew still isn't the accepted answer.. I am sure he is still pretty annoyed by that and all the points he has been missing.. 😦

But just to be clear.. it is those exact things that are the top 5 reasons when that question comes up immediately. They are very bullish on it too.. Matthew in his last all-hands meeting was saying that it has been great that we have been growing our large customers base as well as we did, but that we shouldn't lose sight of the growth of the lower tiers, including the free tier.

$work spends like $25/mo with Cloudflare because of me using the free plan and then getting them to it at work. Certainly not a lot of money, but it's still something!
