My company Akamai Technologies, is hiring 5 developers, 100% remote at mid-senior level. However HR requires some form of technical exam that’s standardized.
m
You could ask them to take and pass the Adobe Certified Professional: Adobe ColdFusion exam.
j
I’ll present that. Right now unfortunately there are loathe to even say ColdFusion on the job req. because it doesn’t fit in the other language specifications. We just say “and other legacy environments”.
m
I hope that is referring to the code-set itself. ColdFusion is hardly "legacy". If I can help in any way, please let me know. You are welcome to contact me directly at takata@adobe.com.

This is so dumb and it frustrates me so much to see HR requiring this sort of thing 😞

Shows that the HR folks got their jobs by succeeding at tests just like this 🙃
m
I'm curious who they use for things like React, Node.JS, etc. Is there a company that they focus on to provide the testing materials and proctoring?
j
I’m not the hiring manager. I was simply asked why this can’t be held to the same standard as say hiring a python, java or javascript dev. Again there’s standardized testing, www.hackerrank.com. These are entry level developer jobs in an enterprise environment for a multinational. The fact that they need a way to measure something fairly/objectively for what you can’t get on a college transcript isn’t silly per se.
s
But these are actively useless tests. They don't test for actual development ability, they test for "test-passing" ability. I hate that the industry still hasn't learned their lessons on this.

(I've been fighting this for 30 years as a hiring manager!)
m
Look, I mean, at LEAST this isn't a whiteboard coding challenge lol. It could be worse.
I'm going to contact HackerRank and see about adding CF to their list of available languages.
j
I don’t disagree… however, when looking to create a team of 10+ ColdFusion devs…. which is what is happening here… HR is going to look for quick wins

I'm just happy to see hiring targeting CF developers.
j
Me too 🙂

OK I've reached out and going to see about what the process might entail to add a CFML assessment to HackerRank. In the mean time, honestly the only somewhat "legit" testing you'll see (provided and supported by Adobe) is the ACP:ACF. James can you tell me who runs your Adobe account? Like who does Akamai connect with to engage in customer success/support situations? I want to see if there's anything we can do to help y'all along in this.

I have mentioned this convo to the hiring manager and the ACP:ACF as a possible testing path forward. She is looking it over, I also gave her your email, Mark.

Fantastic James. Happy to help in whatever manner I can.

10+ CF devs in which world ?😀
m
(psst... you know there's a 1000+ cfml devs just in the #adobe channel right? lol)
j
LOL. And we can make more…

Good to know that but I do not see much work at least in Indian IT market.

Codewars has CFML in beta. https://www.codewars.com/
j
That’s actually extremely cool. We have co-ops use Codewars for python.
m
James, I realize you are looking for in-house, but if you are still looking all our devs pass a standard coding test. It is our test and based on our standard but it might be enough to pitch them if you are desperate. 🙂 @Mark Takata (Adobe) - love your idea of adding that track to hackerrank.

TIL Akamai uses CF. 🙂

@Mark Takata (Adobe), just following up on this thread since I bugged you a bunch a while back. 🙂. We are putting 3 of our new/junior level engineers through the Adobe Certification course, and so far all 3 had positive things to say. In particular they like building out their own local version and trying out code themselves, learning-through-discovery. They are all 0-2 years professional experience.

Absolutely fantastic James, I'm stoked to hear it! Developer education and experience are high on my list this year, so hearing feedback is critical. Keep it coming, and thank you for hiring junior CF devs! It goes unsaid too often, the junior dev pipeline is far too small, so I get super stoked to hear about it when a company is doing the right thing. 🙂
