@Mark Takata (Adobe) I realize this is praaaaaabably a silly question to ask, but on the off chance it's public info, can you tell us approx. how many people there are on the CF team and its approx. budget? And/or the revenue from CF licenses annually? I'm curious how it compares with resources allocated to various other server-side languages
m
Sorry Mith, that's not really shareable info. The budget/revenue especially. In terms of number of people, that's a bit wonky. I'm actually not sure who would count as "CF team". Like, there's people like myself who are (currently!) fully CF. Like, I very VERY rarely do work for the other products in our business unit. But then there are folks that work on multiple products. I will say this, if you took everyone who "works on ColdFusion" and tried to put them all in a conference room, it would either end up as a call to the fire marshal or it would have to be a REALLY big conference room lol. Keep mind also that there are not only FTE Adobe folks, but many, many consultants, contractors and the like from our trusted partners who help to support our ecosystem and even do work on programming, supporting, etc.

I think the comparison you're trying to make is likely an apples to oranges one. CF is really one of the only paid server side language ecosystems. A better comparison, if one was to be made, would be to compare CF to something like Microsoft SQL Server, a paid ecosystem which includes its own programming layer but also much more. Sadly, Microsoft doesn't answer my phone calls after the one time I tried to deliver a singing telegram to their offices. 🤣

OTOH they employ Mark, so their budget has gotta be at least on the order of supervillain-with-volcano-lair caliber
and if they haven't issued him a company persian cat yet, that's probably the next work anniversary

That's true. I'm pretty high maintenance lol. Champagne and caviar all day! 😂

Even back when I worked there I don't think I could have even answered those questions internally and I knew a lot of the CF "team" personally 🙂
m
Yeah Sean, and I think things have only become more complex. Our structure internally is... um, interesting. Something I think most folks don't know is that my official title is not "ColdFusion Evangelist". I'm an "Adobe Technical Evangelist" assigned to the ColdFusion team. Its an extremely key point, as my reporting chain is NOT through CF. This allows me to voice my opinion and share critical feedback without fear of upsetting anyone such that it might threaten my career. In short, I am able to authentically represent the CF community's interests internally while still keeping my job lol. This structure is repeated for all of the evangelists in my group. I think it allows us to better serve our communities and customers, though occasionally I think some team members get... um, a bit upset with me. Subtle, I am not. At the end of the day though, we're all on the same team working towards the same goal: making Adam drink more. I think we're well on our way towards success in that endeavor. 😜

I'd say so, he's at the pub RIGHT NOW, in fact...or at least was an hour ago, so probably still is.

lol @ all the info and replies. Understood - but also a valuable tidbit about the org structure and reporting line. That's a great idea to align incentives for the best outcome for both you and the CF team. Thanks for sharing. I'm afraid I'm now picturing Mark a bit tipsy and still trying to pull of a heist from a pub. "No noo, you guysh gotta... gotta obpen the vault befurrrr you tryn get thuh moneeeeeeeyouttuvit."
m
Believe me Mith, that wouldn't be the worst thing I'd ever done using a pub as HQ lol
s
I knew Adam was at the pub right. I didn't know Mark was too -- bit early for that, esp. on a Tuesday (but I can understand dealing with this community being enough to drive you to drink!).
m
Wait wait lmao, I'm not there YET. Sheesh. Actually running a tech meetup at a brewery tomorrow evening. Not to say there may or may not have been something "extra" in my coffee. Shhhhh... 😉
