# lucee
o
Where do I set my environment viriables on a production environment?
m
It all depends what your production enviornment is like.... are you using : • containers • command box / CFCONFIG • 500 monkeys at a keyboard working for banana's
o
• command box / CFCONFIG on Ubuntu
m
I would utilize in this situation .env files and use this CommandBox module https://www.forgebox.io/view/commandbox-dotenv and then part of your CI/CD pipeline load your secrets into your environment files as needed
o
so don't use the system environment variables?
m
well the only issue with having it part of your system environment would be how easily repeatable/debug-able is it? How hard would it be for someone else to pop into your project and take over if the discovery of the variables is an additional barrier? Just my opinion.
o
It's just me unfortinately 😞
m
well then how easy would it be for you to forget about such variables then 🙂 All I know for me even on single developer projects ... there are moments when it feels like I need a new onboarding because I forgot everything that I have ever done...
o
Well I am getting this error:
Could not find a Java System property or Env setting with key [DB_DATABASE].
and I have installed the dependencies including dotenv
b
There's nothing wrong with using actual system env vars, it's just that they're a pain to use and control in Windows
o
This is Ubuntu 22
b
Docker makes them 1000 times easier to manage, document, and contorl
Ok, same thing
unless you have some script that starts your site and you want to set them all in there
o
I am using dotenv and a .env file
b
Well I am getting this error:
Getting that error where?
o
b
But you also asked about using your system env vars
so don't use the system environment variables?
So I answered your question
I don't know what your code is in your application.cfc so it's hard to say
I'd do some debugging and see if your .env is getting picked up. The .env lib has tons of debugging you can enable for it
o
The same as my git
b
Also, dump out al the env vars in the server scope to se what's there
o
How do i do that?
b
The same as my git
Are you suggesting I have access to your Git repo. Because I don't. So... I'm unclear how you're expecting to get help here
o
oh sorry my git repo is public
b
How do i do that?
What options did you find when you Googled that haven't worked yet
o
dumped using
env
my coldbox environment variables don't show the coldbox ones
b
dumped using
env
I don't know what that means
o
env is a command to show environment variables
b
Not for your server, it isn't
o
image.png
b
The CLI has env vars, but those aren't necessarily the same as the env vars in a given server you start
Also, the env command has nothing at all to do with a
.env
file
To see what the environment of your server has, dump in ColdFusion the
server.system.environment
struct
And if you are expecting a given
.env
file to be loaded on server start, check if it's in the web root and enable the debugging in the
commandbox-dotenv
module and do a
server start --verbose --dryrun
as a test to see if that file is getting loaded
o
@bdw429s It's showing the code instead of executing it:
<cfoutput>
writeDump(server.system.environment);
</cfoutput>
I wrapped the code inside a cfoutput, so not sure what the issue is
m
So WriteDump is a CFSCRIPT command so should be in a <cfscript> tag
o
Thank you
Nope it isn't loading the variables from the dotenv files:
m
have you tried starting with the parameters and settings Brad suggested above
o
Working on it now
Seems the .env file is being loaded?
m
I ran a simple test on a fresh site and the .env file was loaded and appeared in the system.environment and in the debug it included after Server start comand ... - DENVVar=Value are you sure that you have the commandbox-dotenv module installed...
o
@Michael Schmidt Yes I just forced it to reinstall:
Finally here are the system dependencies, with dotenv shows as installed
@Michael Schmidt @bdw429s Just uninstalled commandbox-dotenv and exported the environment variables so they are system-wide and the issue still persists. At this point I am unsure if it is an issue with my code or the vps they set up. If the environment variables are system-wide shouldn't Coldbox pick them up even with out commandbox-dotenv? Clarification: by system-wide I mean they are exported from /etc/profile
b
Are you running the server under another user entirely. perhaps one with a different profile
I think there's something else going on that we can see so it's really hard to tell
I'm still not clear whether you enabled the dotenv verbose debugging like I suggested or not
Coldbox pick them up even with out commandbox-dotenv?
ColdBox does nothing directly with
.env
files.
o
@bdw429s Yes I have a root user and another user for my site. However as the environment variables as in etc/profile, they are available to all uses on that server. Yes I have enabled verbose debugging. The logged in user has owner rights to the box application and coldbox application files. Also I am running coldbox as the correct user.
image6.png
b
I have a root user and another user for my site.
Hold up, this changes everything
When you run CommandBox under different users, it creates different installation directories under each user home folder
Each install dir has its own modules, settings, servers, etc
So just because you run
package list --system
under your user and see a given package installed, that doesn't mean another user on the same machine has that packaged installed in their copy of CommandBox
o
I'm only ever running it as that user though
b
I highly recommend you "pin" your CommandBox home to a shared folder for all users.
o
how do i do that?
b
Docs, my friend 🙂
Put a
commandbox.properties
file in the same folder as the
box
binary that points to the commandbox home you wanty all users to share
Copy code
commandbox_home=/path/to/commandbox/home
That could easily explain why dotenv wasn't working if you run the server under a different user than the user you installed the module with.
o

@Ookma-Kyi I'd guess it's a permissions issue
Time to put on your debugging hat and take a look
o
@bdw429s gave full permissions to every user on the /opt/commandbox folder to every user on the server
ran
install
and it still persists http://app.ookma-kyi.tech/
b
What still persists?
The error you pasted above of CommandBox not starting?
I'm unclear why you're sending me links to a running server, when the current report is CommandBox won't even start
That doesn't make any sense
o
Coldbox is running under /opt/commandbox with 0777 group users
b
So.... CommandBox is running now?
o
and I installed the dependencies with commandbox pinned
b
I really can't follow what you're doing
i can't read your mind
o
Ok from the top
I installed commandbox to /opt/commandbox
gave full permissions to everyone
pinned box to /opt/commandbox
ran box
ran
install
to download dependencies
@bdw429s Still getting cannot find env variable DB_DATABASE ^^^
b
And where exactly is the env var supposed to be coming from in this current setup?
Are you using a
.env
file for actual system env vars set in the OS?
o
using commandbox-dotenv
b
Ok, have you enabled the verbose debugging output on that module I suggested before?
o
Yes before I reinstalled commandbox
reenabling it now
b
And what does it say when you start the server?
Also, is the
.env
file in the web root?
o
it's in
public_html
with the rest of the files
image.png
looks like it's enabled
b
What about when you start the server?
Do a
--verbose
start
And it should tell you exactly what it's doing
o
Copy code
server start --verbose --dryrun

Also I didn't write that, that is the deafult coldbox implementation.
b
ColdBox does that to support old verions of ColdFusion
if you're on a modern version of Lucee or ACF, you can depend on the server scope
Which is why I told you yesterday to use that
So basically, from your test above, it seems everything is working correctly as expected?
o
It still can't find DB_DATABASE yet so i'll get back to you when I issue a fix and confirm the issue is resolved
b
If you dump out the environment vars, is it there?
from the output above, it should be there
You can't see the env vars from the server start output, but they basically mirror the java system properties, which you can see being set here

That code literally makes zero sense

is a coldfusion scope name
Not a Java class
Are you not familiar with the feature of Adobe and Lucee I've been talking about where java system props and env vars are available as a struct inside the servrer scope?
o
oh sorry I thought that was the server scope
nope new to CFML
Your function can basically just be doing this
Copy code
return server.system.properties[ name ] ?: server.system.environment[ name ] ?: defaultValue;
o
I applied that to the live app and the issue persists. I checked my server environment variables and they aren't showing.
It appears .env is picking it up, but the app itself isn't?

Ok, something is very very wrong... I made the environment variables system-wide again and it is showing up in the terminal
but it isn't showing up in the app itself which it should as since it is in the system environments I shouldn't need to load it from a .env file at all

Regarding the defaultValue not being defined, you can't just that code I typed directly unless you are always providing a default value. Don't just blindly copy stuff out of Slack, but think about how to adapt it to what you have.
I was showing you how to use the server scope to access env vars and java properties, I wasn't necessarily giving you code to just copy directly
I have no idea why your env vars aren't working, but you've got something amiss that there isn't enough information here to solve
I assume it's related to how your server process is being launched
o
Fixed this issue, the problem was tomcat doesn't allow external environment variables and had to be manually exported in the setenv.sh file
b
Wait, wait, Tomcat??
o
Yep
b
Since when was Tomcat involved in any of this?
I thought you were using CommandBox!
Once again, this is a totally different converstaion
o
I didn't even know
I am using commandbox
b
Why on God's green earth are we looking at CommandBox if this is a Tomcat hosted site?
Make up your mind-- you're using CommandBox or TOmcat, but not both
At least to run the server
o
This is how it was setup by my host
I have no say in it
b
But you have a say in the questions you asked here
We've been helping you for days and you just now mention this is on Tomcat
We've been trying to answer questions about how it would work on CommandBOx
o
Yes but, I didn't know until I started poking around my VPS
b
You've got to do a better job about asking for help to be honest.
o
How would of I known though?
I have Vitamin to manage my site and Lucee
b
This is like calling the Ford dealership and talking to their techs for 2 days and then telling them you actually have a Dodge, lol
o
And it still doesn't work 100%... 😵‍💫
I am using commandbox though
b
To be honest, I don't think these online forums are a good way for you to get help
There's simply too many very important details left out that lead down unproductive rabbit trails
m
oh my goodness
o
I didn't know tomcat was overwritting my stuff
b
I'd really recommending hiring some consulting from somewhere to help
o
I don't have any money seriously
I never knew they were running tomcat
Like I said it still doesn't work 100% as every url shows what seems to be a not found page that isn't my app
b
You've unfortunately got more to untangle than I have time for. Maybe you can get some other eyes on this, but I'd start a new thread for a new question. The first rule of asking for help however, is you need to be able to explain what you need to happen and exactly what you have setup to make it happen that isn't working. It sounds like you don't have rewrites enabled for SES URLs, but there's a bunch of unknowns you'd need to provide for people to help you surrounding your web server setup.
o
and exactly what you have setup to make it happen that isn't working.
That can be an issue cause like I said, my host Viviotech was the one who set up my vps
b
Then maybe start with their support. If you don't know how your server is configured, no one here can really help.
o
That can also be a problem cause they want $250/hr to provide me support...
