Hey all. Our awesome Product Manager @Charvi and I need some feedback from the community on an important issue in ColdFusion that will have a big effect on some of our future development direction. In fact, we have a few polls which we are using to collect information to help guide us on a path that aligns more closely with the interests of the community. SO, with that said, we would very much appreciate if you could take a couple quick minutes of your day (or anytime between now and September 8th) to fill out this poll: https://forms.office.com/r/nHHpF6KWjL PLEASE NOTE: We are very specifically NOT requiring emails or other identifying information in order to reduce any fears that the data might be used to email to you or market to you in some way. Even if you include an email, we will not be using that to send you marketing email (though we may contact you directly, either myself or Charvi, to get further details or ask clarifying questions).

Seeing the poll questions makes me curious about what percentage of your business customers actually run on those two (very expensive) app servers... but I will assume you can't share such a market breakdown?
m
Sean, we've been surprised ourselves on occasion. We do not have any meaningful way of knowing exactly how many folks are running those (though we do know a few who are, and that there are more folks who are who we don't know about!). We really want better, deeper insight into those folks who we're NOT aware of, so that as we move forward on some development vectors we can communicate intentions and test more deeply. This is one of the first in many instances of deeper transparency into our development direction. I think you will like how Charvi thinks about product development, and the path we are seeking to take. As always though, we are steering a very large ship, so changes take time. You just saw our rudder shift a bit. More to come. 🙂

Back when I was at Macromedia/Adobe, we were estimating a project and IT required that we get quotes for WebLogic since it was their "standard" -- although we'd mostly used JBoss. The $$$ numbers were astounding for that project -- something like $370,000 in licensing as I recall plus annual support on top. Needless to say, we got IT overruled and went with JBoss instead -- even with a top-tier support contract, it was a fraction of cost of WebLogic...

(the same IT folks also required that we get quotes for Oracle database -- another "standard" -- but again they backed down and let us use MySQL 🙂 )

I enjoy push polls, and so should you. That survey has nothing to do with the Coldfusion community, it's more akin to a real reflection of how very disconnected Adobe is from the Coldfusion community. Oh well, back to the show.

Aren't you a ray of sunshine?
e
Just straight to the point, if you are going to ask for a Poll from the "CF Community" and then ask for CRM info line 1 and then targeted ask about Technologies that even IBM can't sell, I guess its better to be "direct" than all puffery.
m
Yes, CRM info. You caught me in my fiendish plot to gather deep insight into the CF community's habits through an open text optional field that you could put a haiku about puppies into if you wanted to. Guilty. Also, 33,000+ companies use IBM WebSphere. Any other issues you'd like to point out? Maybe make fun of my haircut?
b
Survey seems fine to me. IBM has (surprisingly) been slow to adopt the new J2E standards, which puts Adobe in a tough situation if they are going to update to the Jarkarta namespace and still want to support all the same servlets

@Evil Ware You are sailing pretty close to getting booted out of this community. A number of people have complained about you, but so far the Admins have decided you haven't quite crossed the line.

fwiw, we're not using any of the JEE stuff at all, so the whole survey is inapplicable (unless you want it filled out as "tomcat" because cf ships that by default. Along the smae lines as sean's initial question, it makes me wonder what percentage of the community this even applies to at all.

You caught me in a snarky mood after defending my budget for 24, which includes over an hour of listening to others drone on about other technologies, and what their groups are doing, and me going on about how great CF 2023 is. If you think my observation is personal, it's not.
s
@Evil Ware Then perhaps you should step away and not dump on us just b/c you're having a shitty day?
e
The irony, sure.
m
Tim, totally up to you. This is the first of a number of polls, and the future ones will apply to a far greater portion of the community. Appreciate your candor. :)
s
@Tim I filled it out as a Jetty/Undertow user (we used to use Tomcat, years ago).

d
Well this was fun. (Need to learn to write a haiku)

Mark, do you want those of us NOT using WebSphere or WebLogic to fill out this survey? Or do you only want to hear form those that do.
m
Miguel, the most important data points are folks NOT using Tomcat. So JBoss EAP, WIldFly, WebLogic or WebSphere are the most important. We assume the vast majority are using Tomcat. We also want to hear if you're currently using Tomcat and have plans to migrate to any of the other application servers.
m
Okay, thanks for clarifying. We are currently using Tomcat. We did use WebSphere before but it's been a long time.

(back in the day, at Macromedia, getting CFMX 6 running on Tomcat as a WAR was a "big deal" because that was the only way to run CFMX on a Mac back then -- and Macromedia used CFMX on Tomcat for quite a few things internally on Solaris, although for official production stuff we used JRun; where I work now, we used Tomcat + WAR for years, then switched to Undertow via CommandBox)
