I see that this Slack is nearing its limit of free messages. I would strongly recommend considering a move to Zulip, for the following reasons: • It's an Open Source replacement for Slack with a similar business model and philosophy to cal.com. It can be self-hosted, or there's a SaaS hosted service in order to save time having to manage it yourself. • Zulip Cloud Standard is free for open-source projects! https://zulip.com/for/open-source/ • It's actually significantly better than Slack: https://zulip.com/why-zulip/ • There is a stupidly easy and seamless migration path from Slack which preserves all old messages: https://zulip.com/help/import-from-slack

we’re looking into a few options. most likely will be a thread based forum approach to be more async

That's the really fantastic thing about Zulip which makes it better (IMHO) than Slack, Discord, Rocket.chat, all the others: it's strictly thread-based. As a result it's the only tool I've found which has figured out how to successfully handle both sync and async communication at the same time.
It can be used both as a thread-based forum approach, and as a synchronous IM tool, without anyone having to worry about the distinction between the two.
https://zulip.com/why-zulip/ explains this in more detail.
Discourse does async comms pretty well, but is no replacement for IM. And I think every project needs IM for real-time engagement - even if the default mode of collaboration is async, sometimes it's just not fast enough and you need to get rid of the latency. In those cases, traditional forums don't work. And if a project needs both async and sync comms, and those are satisfied by two separate tools, then there is the inevitable problem of fragmentation of threads / topics across the two tools. Zulip is the only tool I've seen which can bridge this gap and handle both async/async. That's why I'm so excited about it. (BTW I have no affiliations with Zulip.)
