Ublue main differences
# questions

Hello, I want to make something like Bluefin/Aurora but using COSMIC, and I'm using ublue's main template, but I don't know what it includes beyond homebrew and flathub. namely, i wanna know if it includes bazaar, any set of ujust scripts, and topgrade

that depends on what image is your base. if it's a standard bazzite or aurora image, you get everything in those systems, and you just build on top of them
same with bluebuild
j
im basing off the template image so i assume at least codecs, flathub and homebrew are included but idk about anything beyond that
s
the template image itself doesn't have anything
you tell it what image you want to select, for example let's say bazzite-dx
and now you have your own custom image of bazzite-dx
j
well ik that much but because the cosmic image was deprecated a while ago i kinda have to use the template image
so i only have codecs and brew then?
oh and docker or podman, I assume those are included cuz distrobox
s
you have whatever your base image includes
bazzite has tailscale, podman, brew, flatpaks, rpm-ostree, the ujust commands, etc
r
You can find out what it includes exactly by reading a couple lines of bash :P https://github.com/ublue-os/main/blob/main/Containerfile and go from here, also you can look at the build logs if that helps you as well

I think this is more what you specifically were looking for. If I understand this correctly, it shows all of the extra packages installed on all base ublue images (including bazzite, bluefin etc), with a few exceptions listed here for inclusions and exclusions for kinote and silverblue specifically. I think that's what you wanted. https://github.com/ublue-os/main/blob/main/packages.json
Keep in mind that ublue uses negativo17 for codecs and not rpmfusion, but if you're starting from a minimal base image, that makes it a lot easier to switch those out for rpmfusion.
If that's what you want.

thanks, I'm getting the hang of the ublue template image
I have multiple new issues tho, one of them being that the nvidia driver isnt loading and theres no ujust nvidia script despite being mentioned in bluebuild's docs
idk whether to keep any issues here or to make a new post since theres no live thread or anything
b
I don't have an Nvidia card and haven't for a while now, but if I'm not mistaken, there is an akmod module for blue build specifically that you can use to install Nvidia drivers.
j
problem is I'm using that exact module but it doesn't load it properly
nvidia smi is on the system but it said it couldn't connect to the driver
i selected the open module per my card
I read the docs and it said that if I'm on a ublue image and on F42 or newer it should just work so idk what's going on
b
Can you paste the recipe.yml file here?
Or the link to your repo.
b
I think the issue might be that you're not actually using a ublue base image. The base image needs to be an atomic image that already exists. Here's the list of all the ublue images: https://github.com/orgs/ublue-os/packages
So if you want a minimal install of Fedora with only Nvidia drivers, use the base-nvidia image. So it would be this one: ghcr.io/ublue-os/base-nvidia
j
so I can't just bolt on Nvidia onto my custom artifact and just have to clone the whole recipe?
b
They have a cosmic-atomic-nvidia package actually.
I'd start with that as the base image.
j
nah that one was deprecated
that's why I'm using the template and installing the cosmic group
but I'll try cloning the recipe 👍
b
Oh, yeah you're right. I'd do the base image then and install cosmic on it with the dnf module. One thing to note when installing a lot of packages is you can get timed out on system upgrades if a layer is too big, so try and break up your dnf installs into multiple seperate modules. I try to keep each layer under 1GB and it's worked fine since I did that. If you install multiple gigs of packages on one dnf module it will work, but you won't be able to rebase to it or do updates if you install it from that image.

Nice, I'm gonna save this now too. I didn't know this list existed.
Are there any major differences between these and ublue images @xyny ?
x
nothing major, except ours are made by us with our tooling and meant to be used as base images for our users, while ublue main does whatever ublue main wants

thanks, this solved the nvidia issue, and its a better base. all that i have left now is faffing about with any userspace stuff, eg, adding a certain tap to homebrew, default pinned apps to the panel, etc. i couldn't find a way to do that directly in the docs so I assume I'm gonna have to actually mess around with bash or container files now
besides that, one quirk outside of userspace is that the ISOs I make with bluebuild don't have a user creation part which is an issue for cosmic since it doesn't have an account setup like gnome and kde do, idk if theres anything i could do about that one tho
b
Use your /etc/skel directory for that and create an image for installation. Once you set up a user account any files in /etc/skel will be added to your new user account. As far as the account creation part, not sure what to do there. I see what you mean, I use Silverblue, so I don't have that issue.
