are you installing bentoctl in your virtualenv? If thats the case you might need to activate your venv first
s
yea, basically created venv folder, then activate, then install, then its not there...I can see it in the site-packages folder, and it says requirement satisfied...even vscode has the correct venv selected
a
can you send the output of
whence -a bentoctl
?
s
whence: command not found
should I may uninstall all my pythons and just restart from the best one? I have a few versions installed...maybe its messing w venv?

oh you are on windows
s
=X
is mac where its at for bento dev?
a
I believe our Unix support are solid
I recommend to have something like conda to manage python version on windows. I personally find windows are notoriously horrible when setting up Python and ensure PATH are correctly added
It might have to do with your venv folder is not on the WINDOW_PATH
or venv didn’t append its bin path to the WINDOW_PATH or whatever PATH variable on windows is 😐
s
yea ive had the similar experience for last many years when I had to jump back into py...ok, ill dig into conda and get it setup and figured out and try again...was just using normal venv but saw conda is the way to go
hrmm ok ill check that first
a
You can check the path under venv folder bin
s
weird part is i can use most of the other packages
a
it should have bentoctl or bentoml there
s
actually, thats another thing...mine is venv/Scripts
not bin
everywhere says bin but noticed all that is in Scripts on mine...may be a version issue
a
another suggestion on Windows is to use WSL
s
gotcha ok
a
hmm is that a behaviour for venv on Windows?
s
im gonna try conda and cleaning up my python installs...if i cant get it working ill spin up WSL or boot up my linux machine
i am not sure
i havent messed w python in many years till last few months
a
ah, I’m just curious. What brought you back to the whatsoever Python land 😄
s
ive been developing platforms with node and frontends w react and software with unreal engine...but now our agency is building some ai art tools and i need to basically create a microservice out of stablediffusion (and others) to have our platform communicate with to generate imagery
so loving bento as it takes care of all the complexity that I dont hve time to figure out properly rn and lets me just get the service running
🚀 1
a
thats very cool! I hope that the stable diffusion example from our end works for you
s
it def does...been deep in automatic's codebase and this one trying to understand how the whole python stuff connects to the service so I can do a bunch of parameter stuff and experiments...its great
parrot hd 1
rather be feeling like a newb in python for a bit tho than another decade of only node
k im gonna research this stuff, thanks for the feedback
a
ah dw I’m still figuring it out
s
fyi just noticed on stackoverflow that windows does use Scripts over bin for the folder structure
a
ok it seems like a default Python behaviour on Windows. But anw can you run
/path/to/Script/bentoctl
?
s
tried that earlier, it says "path is a directory"
which it is, has this inside:
a
just out of curiosity, how do you initialize a venv on Windows?
s
well ive been using
python -m venv ./venv
then
source ./venve/Scripts/activate
which looks like it works and vscode shows it activated
anytime I run a python command it shows the name (venv) under
a
can you do a quick search under the venv folder to see whether it has a binary folder?
s
its just an empty
Include
folder, the
Lib
folder with all the packages, and the
Scripts
folder with all the scripts in it...
a
oh so it is
bentoctl.exe
s
that exe is not in there
bentoml.exe is
a
when you run
pip install bentoctl
it stills didn’t go there?
s
correct...i see it in the /.Lib/site-packages tho
that is werid because most of the others are there...like transformers, diffusers, etc
a
anw i suggest you to maybe nuke the python version and use conda to manage it. Sorry for the hassle
s
no worries, i need to get python organized properly anyway
a
maybe cc @jjmachan also as well to take a look into this. Might be a bug when we package bentoctl, as bentoctl is using poetry as opposed to setuptools (which is what bentoml is using rn).
s
im reading up on conda docs now
appreciate the feedback and for taking a sec to look at all this.
got bentoctl working using conda 🙂
thanks for the advice!
a
awesome.
Maybe we should advice all our windows user to use conda 🤔
Would be great if you can make a contribution to the installation page for windows user 😄
but no pressure
s
would love to!
was taking notes so should be good to make it...will letcha know 🙂
a
an entrypoint for this would be under
docs/source/install.rst
😃
s
in bentoctl repo?
not seeing the /source/ folder there
a
Oh I mean for bentoml in general
👍 1
s
these are just the docs that get deployed to your docs page? just want to clarify, going to follow your layout and style and stuff
its quite small of a section, should I maybe put a Managing Environments for Windows somewhere in there?
so basic • install miniconda/anaconda • create environment w python v set • activate env • pip install -r -requirements
could write it to make sense to the reader, but wanna be sure I put it in proper place
a
I was thinking you can make a dropdown called
For Windows users
Then you can say recommend to use conda to manage python version and ensure every packages are setup correctly
s
hey, fyi, everything is working fine, but when I attempt to run
bentoctl build -b stable_diffusion_fp32:latest
, it gives me a huge stack trace that ends with
The system cannot find the file specified
I am running it from the bentoctl folder with the .tf files at the same level
a
Let’s start a new thread?
