Very cool @bsek , one curiosity, just as curiosity, that i have would be to compare arm native versus 68k emu68. This smp field is one of the tradeoffs.
b
you mean comparing running aros arm native vs running aros 68k under emu68k on a pi?
c
Yes !
b
question is if flipping the coin, and running emu68 (or @John Knipper variant) under arm native is a better choice
c
I also had that question too, as i said, it's all related to how you expect the system to behave. I dont think you fully undestand how emu68 works. I dont think it would be something easy to make it work that way, even if it was conceived with this objective.
I allready spent lot of time in this subject without an answer, the only answer that i got so far is that i would like my pi behaving the same way emu68 gives, but there will be questions that will be solved along the way or even not be solved at all.
Even if you got emu68 as a subsystem of the arm native you will not have the same system behaviour. Its not something about better or worse, but how you expect the system to behave.
b
Sure, and what you prefer is totally subjective. My take is that classic Amiga is fun for a while, but eventually I get tired of all the limitations. When I started this Raspberry Pi journey, I wondered whether I should try to get AROS running on my A4000 or instead run it on the much more powerful and inexpensive Pi 3 sitting next to it. I chose the latter, simply due to the fact you can have smp and you can have hardware accelrated opengl. Not exactly the same question you ask yourselv, but for me aros is close enough to behaving like a real amiga and with the posibility to be much more
j
let me pull the numbers I have
c
As i said @bsek i have done all this question to myself before.
What i have is that 68k has a limitation and emu68 was never challenged beside legacy hardware
But, emu68 design is exactly the 68k with the underline hardware
Atm it lives in a legacy world, from hardware and software perspectives. It has limitation, but not necessarilly thoses.
In some moment those limitations will arise and will be or not answers for it. And than the tradeoffs will be a matter of choice AND limitations, atm it is not.

On my computer, my software built my myself, etc 😉
c
Your comparasion is wrong when you say: “running aros on my a4000”. Running aros on emu68 is not running it in the A4000 as all the underline hardware is the pi
Cool @John Knipper that is the kind of info handy to have. (In the line of my original question 🙂) thanks.

You can imagine emu68 as a virtual isa of the plataform, i think
b
@CoolCat yes, you are right, it was a bad comparison.
