at the risk of sounding silly, it improves performance in the situations where your performance is limited by lack of replication 🙂
in particular, if all your Historical process CPUs are at 100% during a query, then increasing replication won't do anything useful
but if they are less than that, it may help, if it means you get to use more Historicals
classic case where replication is helpful for query perf is where you have a small number of hotspot segments (certain segments that get more queries than others)
like, if you have 5 hotspot segments, with the default replicas of 2, they will replicate to at most 10 servers.
in this scenario, let's say you have 50 servers. then, increasing replicas can improve perf b/c those hotspot segments can go out to more servers
