Especially given that K8s is written in GoLang (rather than a more sane language like Java), wherein any plugins need to actually be built with the code, I think this is great. There should be no strong integrations with any vendors in the upstream open source project

I think Kafka Connect does a fantastic job of this. The Apache Kafka project has zero Connectors implemented, but you can just upload a JAR to your Connect cluster.
And all the vendors ship their own things

In K8s land unfortunately you can't just upload a JAR, so you need to use webhooks and controllers or GRPC communication between processes. Slightly more clunky, but I think separating it is the right way to go
