I've been building out an app and was curious what people have experiences or strong opinions on what to use for do recurring billing and subscription payments. Stripe Billing? Paypal/Braintree? ChargeBee? Something else?

hi @Jonathan Hsieh - (disclaimer - I'm from AWS) lot's of "it depends" to this of course, especially on if it's just recurring. I've had a lot of customers with good experiences with Stripe for billing, their API is strong.. Our team wrote a blog on this a while back Building a Third-Party SaaS Metering and Billing Integration on AWS. Depending on your customers, you may well end out building on Marketplaces like AWS Marketplace. There are some cool tools like Amberflo that can sit between you and these providers, and help you iterate on your subscription pricing... Would love to hear what some other people are doing 🙂

👋 if you just have a subscription (i.e., a couple plans, $/month, no usage based metering or anything), then you can probably use just about anything on the market. Stripe is solid because they have good ways to handle things like credit card fraud and filtering out specific types of cards and other stuff using Radar

Re, Stripe subscription: One of Nile's customers just implemented that last week. We tied it into Nile's tenant model, so each tenant has its subscription info, renewal and all that. Took him about 2 hours to build the whole thing. He said he'll contribute the example, but we built it all off the Stripe docs and it was super easy.

Thanks folks. I caught up with a friend who was at chargebee yesterday and he suggested stripe or paypal/braintree initially, and eventually add chargebee to handle subscriptions. A service like chargebee would allow you to later negotiate for better rates once revenue goes 1m-5m+ keeping subscription policies and experiments decoupled from receiving payments.
Sounds like I'll go with stripe for now. "about 2 hours to build" sounds great!
