I have a question about the legal side of things for Saas apps. I have watched a lot of videos on how to create a Saas app, but they don't really talk about the legal side of things. I have never built a Saas app, so I am new to all this stuff. How do you take care of the legal side of things for a Micro Saas app?

Hi Caleb! These are good questions and while I think the answer will look different for everyone, I can share my experience with you for our first SaaS! 1. We built a B2B saas so we incorporated right away. Incorporating your business will protect you personally from liability (basically anything that the businees doesnt own is off limits) if a business is not happy and decides to sue you. 2. We hired a lawyer to create us a privacy policy and terms of service once we started getting over 100 users. 3. If applicable, keep up with regulations within your industry and try your best to stay compliant. We had to since our company was in Web3. Once those things were in place, we didn't have to think too much about legal stuff outside of getting a custom contract created for a specific enterprise use case. I hope that helps!

Do I need a lawyer to create the privacy policy and the terms of service?

You could probably get by with a template from rocketlawyers or something like that until you start getting some traction where you think the investment would be worth it but obviously this is not legal advice lol just my opinion 🙂

I am basically creating a recipe filter and I don't want to get sued because someone made a recipe that didn't fit their diet.

Honestly, this is not my area of expertise 😕 but I imagine if you consult with a lawyer and include language that protects you from anomolies in the privacy policy and TOS and you have disclaimers in appropriate places you will feel better about it
c
Do you have any idea how much it would cost, ruffly, to hire a lawyer to write the documents?
c
yeah, probably a couple hundred dollars. It might be cheaper if you bring them a template and have them revist/edit the template compared to writing one from scratch!
c
Ok. Are the privacy policy and the TOS the only legal documents I will need?
c
You will probably need more. but as of my knowledge, that is a good place to start. 🙂 I say that because if you look at big companies they have lawyers on retainer and on staff that generate tons of legal documents for them. But, we are small startups and have to make do with what we have. Good luck!

One more question. If you were me, how would you go along creating the legal side of things for a Saas?
c
I would consult with a lawyer if I was particularly worried about things

Ok, thanks for the help!
