Such a critical subject, I will read it all... So, I read it, I think it's a very good introduction and that you nailed the shared responsibility part... Teams/Units should be accountable to their spending, and should actively measure and monitor it... What I find is that developers aren't equipped*at all* for this. From the cloud perspective 1. Finance/ Ops do not provide dev teams with actual cost - they keep the discounts and reservations etc. To themselves. However, imo and experience, this is quite easy to get around, just measure the base cost (as appears in vendor tables, make sure finance knows this, so they can do the math, and keep the raw data (the Excel with all the items). This provides a neutral and visible way to compare. 2. Create tags/labels that identify the owning team/unit, and send them a daily/weekly cost report. Create org alerts to find when a team is over and they will need to explain (post mortem like any production event) - otherwise they will neglect it What I did take away is that it should be on the table as part of the non-functional requirements from day one, it affects the architecture as well... For example if computation runs on shared infra - it's not as easy as if a tenant gets his own instance (or pod) - many times I would create a batch job to do stuff and I know there is a tenant loop in there somewhere but you can't really know the actual usage... So, I know my next design will consider this... (It's a good best practice anyway to segregate client work loads as much as possible - so the two considerations compliment each other). Thanks!

Damn, that's a great review @Moshe Eshel. You definitely captured the spirit of what we were trying to drive home... And you did it in about 2000 less words 🙂

the Price List API, I've seen customers use that rather than the Cost and Usage Report to avoid this exact issue.

I usually skip talking about tagging and silo resources, I figure they've been covered, but yeah... you very important point
Anyway, thanks for reading @Moshe Eshel, appreciate the feedback!

My pleasure, I will spread it around my list... I also shared it on Twitter but I don't have that much of a following
b
me either, I'll beg @Gwen Shapira to cast her Twitter magic 🙂

OK 🙂 @Bill Tarr can you remind me of your Twitter handle? I have Moshe's but not yours...
b
it's @SaaSTarr

g
makes sense
you are kinda missing a profile photo...
b
kinda missing almost everything
honestly just started using Twitter, just in time for it to go insane
there we go... now I'm a real person on Twitter
sounds like we need a followup blog with more implementation details 🙂

@Bill Tarr go go go... Maybe in your personal blog instead of AWS with no link to your personal profile?!
