It seems pretty basic to separate "turning off the service" from "deleting all the data" by a few days... Obviously hindsight is 20/20, but I can see why the customers would be pissed.

This is probably the worst nightmare for any database operator. Wish them the best.

All these migrations sound tedious. I wonder if the cloud cost they’ll save by shutting down these two regions is worth all the human cost (on their end and their customer’s end). Lots of opportunity cost there… and reduction in the value of their offering since customers apparently needed to babysit the migrations / ask for them / etc. Sad story on many levels.
