I've tested zod now and the error messages aren't great but each function allows you to type a custom message, so you could create a function of functions with the messages you want it to have. I'm gonna give it a run on something I'm working on and will push to GitHub at a later time.

I’m running a game server and when people do things I add data to a MySQL database directly.

Would it still be somewhat performant if I were to send data to a REST api and then add to a supabase database?

The beauty of Supabase is that its built on Postgres, so you could do as you are currently doing with MySQL and just insert the data directly as you get the database connection string directly.

Rust, I’m starting a community server for people to play. The uMod modding API hooks everything in the game. They lock it down to prevent malicious use and only provide MySQL

Do you think I could get around this by using my own REST api and supabase? So instead of adding directly into database I use my web server?

You could do this or just use the supabase-js library or the REST endpoint as these goes thru a pooler so concurrent connections should be handled quite well.

Yeah sure, the `supabase-js` library is just a RESTful API builder, it constructs a URL using the POSTgrest library that interacts with the database through a db pooler. You can view the underlying REST API from inside the dashboard https://app.supabase.com/project/_/api?page=users and clicking on the Bash tab.

That would be the token you got back when you ran the sign in endpoint

This returns a token, that's the token you will need to use as the `SUPABASE_KEY`

So if I were using this in-game I can't expect the user to be logged in on the site - is there a way I can bypass this?

You should be able to get away with passing the same `apiKey` to the `SUPABASE_KEY` if there is no row level security (RLS) policy on the tables you are interacting with. Do note that without RLS you risk your tables being writable by anyone with your supabase url and anon key.

Yeah that is the worry but I don't believe there is much I can do. Since joining the game server doesn't require any login or authentication I can't expect the user to be logged in on the site

Just note that if you were to make a mistake and interact with your project in a client side environment where this key is exposed you would have an issue and would probably need to roll your key at that point

Essentially, the user will get a 'kill' which will send to the server. I hook that function on the server and will then POST the provided data to my database. So the user can see their total kills, etc online

I don't have access to the client side and only the server side. So I should be safe

They expose mySQL and I think they expect everyone to just use that 🤢

Has there been much talk of supporting Steam as an auth provider?

I want to use Discord and Steam. I need to auth user steamid's for this application I'm building. So perhaps the best approach is for me to use Discord and then have a linking page which will get their steamid and input it into the profiles database
